Size. 27,7 x 37,6 cm.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century, Pernambuco was an economically successful Portugese colony, due notably to its prosperous sugarcane cultivation. Olinda, Pernambuco&#8217;s capital, already had Jesuit schools and a hospital. By 1580, Pernambuco was the world&#8217;s leading sugar producer<strong>,<\/strong> while the Dutch (which entertained amicable relations with Portugal) processed and distributed it across Europe. This sweet business turned sour when Spain (involved in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eighty_Years%27_War\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eighty Year&#8217;s War<\/a> with the Netherlands) <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iberian_Union\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">took over the Portuguese crown<\/a> and closed Brazilian harbours to the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p>In order to overcome this situation, the Dutch did what any modern-day venture capitalist does when negotiations get stale: a hostile takeover. The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dutch_West_India_Company\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dutch West India Company<\/a> was founded in the Netherlands in 1621 and sent several expeditions to the Brazilian Northeast coast to regain control of its &#8220;offshore investment&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In 1635, the Dutch conquered Cabo de Santo Agostinho from the Portuguese. In this print we see the cape now under Dutch control, with a bird&#8217;s-eye view of the fortification located there.
