Size (including text): 51.5 \u00d7 62.7 cm.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"333\" data-end=\"768\">At the end of the eighteenth century in The Netehrlands there was a sharp conflict between the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Orangism_(Dutch_Republic)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Orangists<\/a>, who wished to maintain the historic position of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/House_of_Orange-Nassau\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">House of Orange<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Patriottentijd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patriots<\/a>. Amsterdam\u2019s shipwrights were strongly Orangist. For meagre pay they often worked weeks of sixty hours or more. The labourers therefore placed their hopes in the Prince of Orange, since they had little to expect from the liberal wealthy shipowners and merchants.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"770\" data-end=\"983\">In 1787 the workers rose in revolt against their Patriot employers. The day on which this unrest was violently suppressed became known as <strong data-start=\"908\" data-end=\"925\">\u201c<\/strong>Hatchet Day<strong data-start=\"908\" data-end=\"925\">\u201d<\/strong> (<em data-start=\"927\" data-end=\"940\">Bijltjesdag<\/em>), named after the workers\u2019 principal tool.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"985\" data-end=\"1496\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The authority of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_V,_Prince_of_Orange\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stadtholder William V<\/a> was weak. In September 1787 he was aided by his brother-in-law, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frederick_William_II_of_Prussia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">King of Prussia<\/a>. With this so-called Orange Restoration, William V\u2019s power as hereditary stadtholder of the Dutch Republic was restored and the Patriot period came to an end. This \u201creversal of affairs\u201d is what the print celebrates.
