Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm.: 39 x 53 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Het Binnenhof in Den Haag heeft een rijke geschiedenis die bijna 800 jaar teruggaat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Willem_II_van_Holland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Graaf Willem II<\/a> begint in 1248 met de uitbreiding van zijn familielandgoed in Den Haag. Hij bouwt een kapel en een Gotische Ridderzaal op het terrein dat later bekend zal staan als het Binnenhof.<\/p>\n<p>In de 14e eeuw wordt het Binnenhof (toen nog Hof van Holland geheten) wordt meer het politieke centrum van de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Graafschap_Holland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">graafschap Holland<\/a>. Het complex wordt uitgebreid met andere gebouwen rondom de Ridderzaal, waaronder woningen voor edelen en ambtenaren.<\/p>\n<p>In de 15e eeuw krijgt het Binnenhof steeds meer functies en wordt het gebruikt voor vergaderingen, rechtszaken en andere politieke activiteiten. Het complex ondergaat verschillende uitbreidingen en verbouwingen.<\/p>\n<p>Tijdens de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tachtigjarige_Oorlog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tachtigjarige Oorlog<\/a> (1568-1648) wordt het Binnenhof bezet door Spaanse troepen. Na de oorlog wordt het complex hersteld en krijgt het een belangrijke rol in de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Republiek_der_Zeven_Verenigde_Nederlanden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden<\/a>. Dat is het moment dat <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joan_Blaeu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joan Blaeu<\/a> deze gravure opneemt in zijn stedenboek. De <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gouden_Eeuw_(Nederland)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gouden Eeuw<\/a> brengt welvaart en bloei naar de Nederlandse Republiek. Het Binnenhof wordt een belangrijk centrum van politieke macht en culturele activiteiten. In 1651 wordt het <a href=\"https:\/\/www.absolutefacts.nl\/kastelen\/k\/stadhouderlijk-kwartier-binnenhof.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stadhouderlijk Kwartier<\/a> toegevoegd aan het complex, waar de stadhouder en zijn familie verblijven. De centraal in de voorstelling weergegeven <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ridderzaal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ridderzaal<\/a> werd in de 17<sup>e<\/sup>-eeuw voor allerlei andere doeleinden gebruikt, zoals voor verkoop van boeken, wandelplaats, markt, winkelcentrum, wachtruimte voor de rechtbank, exercitieruimte en voor trekkingen van de Staatsloterij (en werd daarom ook wel Loterijzaal genoemd). De naam Ridderzaal is pas in de negentiende eeuw in gebruik geraakt. Toen zijn ook de gebouwen afgebroken die op de prent voor de Ridderzaal staan.<\/p>\n<p>Tot twee keer toe zijn er plannen geweest om het Binnenhof af te breken. Tussen 1806 en 1810 werd het land bestuurd vanuit Amsterdam: koning <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lodewijk_Napoleon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lodewijk Napoleon<\/a> verplaatste zijn zetel naar Amsterdam. De tweede keer dat er dreiging was om het Binnenhof af te breken was in 1848. De toenmalige Staten-Generaal wilden een duidelijk signaal afgeven dat de grondwetsherziening van 1848 de macht bij de Staten-Generaal legde in plaats van bij de koning, en het leek de leden een goed idee om als gebaar het oude machtscentrum af te breken en nieuwe regeringsgebouwen neer te zetten.
