Ets met aquatint (?) vervaardigd <strong>rond 1810<\/strong> door <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/collection\/term\/BIOG50893\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">F.G. Wexelberg<\/a><\/strong> en <strong>Pierre Charles Coqueret<\/strong> (1761-ca. 1832) naar een tekening van <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antoine-Claude_Fleury\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Antoine-Claude Fleury<\/a><\/strong> (-na 1822). Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. (voorstelling) 47,6 x 72,3 cm (papier: 52 x 74,5 cm).<\/p>\n<p>Tijdens de Franse Tijd \u00a0(1794-1814) onderging Antwerpen grote veranderingen op politiek, economisch en cultureel gebied. De stad werd een belangrijk centrum voor de Franse administratie in de regio en werd hoofdstad van het <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikiwand.com\/nl\/Twee_Neten\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">departement van Twee Neten<\/a>. De Franse autoriteiten voerden verschillende hervormingen door om de bestuurlijke en juridische systemen te moderniseren, zoals het invoeren van de Code Napol\u00e9on (het burgerlijk wetboek) en het opzetten van lokale bestuursorganen.<\/p>\n<p>Napoleon erkende het strategische belang van de haven van Antwerpen en besloot deze uit te breiden en te versterken als onderdeel van zijn plannen om het Verenigd Koninkrijk economisch te ondermijnen. Grote werken werden uitgevoerd om de haveninfrastructuur te verbeteren, waaronder de aanleg van dokken (<a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bonapartedok\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bonapartedok<\/a> en het latere <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Willemdok\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Willemdok<\/a>). Ook werd toen de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antwerp_Maritime_Academy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">zeevaartschool<\/a> opgericht.<\/p>\n<p>In een tijd dat oorlogsinspanningen en economische uitbuiting door de Franse autoriteiten een zware last legden op de bevolking, vertelt de voorstelling daarover niets. De prent is immers gemaakt in opdracht van de Franse bezetter. Op de voorgrond komt een gezelschap na een boottochtje aan wal voor een wandeling met uitzicht op deze prachtige stad.
