In de tijd zeer fraai met de hand gekleurd. Afm. (druk): 34,3 x 50,8 cm.<\/p>\n<p>We zien de Friese landen van het <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vlie\">Vlie<\/a> in het westen tot aan de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jade_(rivier)\">Jade<\/a> in het oosten. De kaart komt vanaf 1570 tot 1641 voor in verschillende uitgaven van het <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Theatrum_Orbis_Terrarum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Theatrum Orbis Terrarum<\/em><\/a>, de eerste uitgegeven wereldatlas. Voordat Ortelius in 1579 een zelfstandige kaart van Friesland opnam, was alleen deze gecombineerde kaart in z\u2019n atlas te vinden. Ortelius was de eerste die deze compilatie van de noordelijke gewesten maakte. Hij baseerde zich daarbij waarschijnlijk op kaarten van <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jacob_van_Deventer_(cartograaf)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jacob van Deventer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>De <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nieuwe_tijd\">Nieuwe Tijd<\/a> begon voor Friesland met de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fries-Hollandse_oorlogen#De_laatste_oorlog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">laatste Fries-Hollandse oorlog<\/a> (1515\u20131524). Het platteland had veel te lijden van de strijdende partijen en van profiterende roversbenden. De Zuiderzee werd onveilig gemaakt door de beroemde Friese zeerover Grutte Pier (Grote Pier). Aan het einde van de oorlog, in 1524, kwam Friesland onder het gezag van <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Keizer_Karel_V\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">keizer Karel V<\/a>, die de eerste stadhouders aanstelde en de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heerlijkheid_Friesland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heerlijkheid Friesland<\/a> oprichtte, die toegevoegd werd aan de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Habsburgse_Nederlanden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Habsburgse Nederlanden<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Stormen en stormvloeden zorgden regelmatig voor overstromingen in de Nederlanden. Over de kosten van het dijkonderhoud ontstonden conflicten tussen de belanghebbenden. In Friesland waren onder leiding van stadhouder <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Georg_Schenck_van_Toutenburg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Schenk van Toutenburg<\/a> in 1533 provincie breed afspraken gemaakt over de verdeling van plichten en kosten: het <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Groot_Arbitrament\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Groot Arbitrament<\/a>. De principes van deze afspraken hielden eeuwenlang stand. Opeenvolgende zware stormen tussen 1570 en 1574 sloegen aan de westkust van Friesland zoveel buitendijks land weg, dat de aarden zeedijken ten noorden en ten zuiden van Harlingen niet meer gerepareerd konden worden en meer landinwaarts nieuw moesten worden opgeworpen. Omdat ze niet alleen belangrijk waren als zeewering maar ook als verdedigingswal rond Harlingen nam stadhouder van Friesland, Groningen en Drenthe <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caspar_de_Robles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caspar de Robles<\/a> het voorzitterschap op zich van de projectgroep voor die nieuwe gedeelten.<\/p>\n<p>Tijdens de inhuldiging van <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Filips_II_van_Spanje\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Filips II van Spanje<\/a> weigerden de afgezanten van stadhouder van Friesland te buigen voor de nieuwe koning en gaven hem te verstaan dat &#8220;zij alleen voor God bogen.&#8221; Deze controverse zette de moeizame relatie tussen de Lage Landen en Spanje nog verder onder druk. De opstand tegen het Spaanse gezag (Tachtigjarige Oorlog) brak spoedig ook in Friesland uit.<\/p>\n<p>Onder leiding van <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Willem_van_Bronckhorst-Batenburg_(1529-1573)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Willem van Bronckhorst<\/a> werden Sneek, Dokkum, Bolsward en Franeker door de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Geuzen_(Tachtigjarige_Oorlog)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">geuzen<\/a> bezet. De opstandelingen waren echter niet tegen Caspar de Robles opgewassen, zodat het Spaanse gezag snel weer hersteld werd. De Robles werd op 23 november 1576 in Groningen door eigen soldaten gevangen genomen, vanwege zijn persoonlijke wreedheid en door het achterwege blijven van betaling. Friesland sloot zich aan bij de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pacificatie_van_Gent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pacificatie van Gent<\/a>. De Robles werd met zijn gezin en zijn commandanten in Leeuwarden enige tijd gevangen gehouden omdat de Friezen het geleende geld voor zijn soldaten eerst terug wilden. In maart 1577 werd hij na herhaald aandringen van de landvoogd overgedragen aan stadhouder Hierges in het kader van een gevangenenruil.<\/p>\n<p>In 1580 werd het grootste deel van Friesland opgenomen in de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Unie_van_Utrecht_(1579)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Unie van Utrecht<\/a>. Het gewest werd toen aangeduid als een &#8220;algemene heerlijkheid&#8221; ofwel de heerlijkheid Friesland. Vanwege de inwendige verdeeldheid werd Friesland als vijfde in rang, dus na Utrecht, in het verbond opgenomen. De Staten van Friesland waren samengesteld uit afgevaardigden van de 11 steden en de 30 grietenijen.
