Tartariae, Provinciis<\/em><\/strong>\u201d (Ukraine, which is also the Land of the Cossacks, along with the neighboring regions of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wallachia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wallachia<\/a>, Moldavia, a part of Lesser Tartary). Copper engraving published by <strong>Johann Baptiste Homann<\/strong> of Nuremberg in <strong>1720,<\/strong> with original hand colouring with later additions. Size: 48 x 57,2 cm<\/p>\n<p>The name Ukraine was popularized in the West by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guillaume_Le_Vasseur_de_Beauplan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guillaume La Vasseur de Beauplan<\/a>&#8216;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/descriptiondelv00beaugoog\/page\/n16\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Description d&#8217;Ukraine<\/a><\/em>, first published in Rouen in 1651. The work described Ukraine as several provinces of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crown_of_the_Kingdom_of_Poland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kingdom of Poland<\/a> lying between the borders of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tsardom_of_Russia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Muscovy<\/a> and the frontiers of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Transylvania\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Transylvania<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Beauplan, a military engineer, had spent a significant period of time constructing fortresses in the region in the 1630s. Beauplan&#8217;s map of 1648, entitled <em><a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/3\/3b\/General_Depiction_of_the_Empty_Plains_%28in_Common_Parlance%2C_the_Ukraine%29_Together_with_its_Neighboring_Provinces_WDL79.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Delineatio Generalis Camporum Desortum vulgo Ukraina, Cum adjacentibus Provinciis<\/a><\/em>, shows all of the provinces of Poland bordering on the <em>Campus Desertorum<\/em> or deserted fields, thereby recognizing the Russian and Polish language references to <em>Ukraine<\/em> as the &#8220;border land&#8221; and leading to the popularization of the name in Western Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The region was later defined by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Treaty_of_Zboriv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Treaty of Zboriv<\/a> of 1649, which established the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cossack_Hetmanate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cossack Hetmanate<\/a> in the eastern territories of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Polish%E2%80%93Lithuanian_Commonwealth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Polish\u2013Lithuanian Commonwealth<\/a>. Homann&#8217;s map here, depicts the political changes of the beginning of the 18<sup>th<\/sup> century, where the Russian Empire had lost significant territory in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Northern_War\">Great Northern War<\/a> and where in 1708, the whole area was included into the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kiev_Governorate_(1708%E2%80%931775)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Government of Kiev<\/a> (i.e. under the Russian Empire) and Cossack autonomy was severely restricted. The site of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Poltava\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Battle of Poltava<\/a> in 1709 is marked on the map; the lands of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Danubian_Sich\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Transdanubian Sich<\/a>, which were transferred to Turkey in 1711, are marked as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crimean_Khanate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crimean Khanate<\/a>. The cartouche portrays Hetman <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ivan_Mazepa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ivan Mazepa<\/a> with his followers in exile.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catherine_II_of_Russia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Catherine II of Russia<\/a>\u00a0officially abolished the institute of the Hetman in 1764.<\/p>\n<p>Price: SOLD<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ONE OF ONLY A FEW EARLY MAPS FOCUSING ON UKRAINE \u201cUkrania quae et Terra Cosaccorum cum vicinis Walachiae, Moldoviae, Minoris q.
