In de tijd (?) met de hand gekleurd. Afm. (plaatafdruk) 34,5 x 43,5 cm.<\/p>\n<p>De <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reformatie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reformatie<\/a> en het begin van de <a title=\"Nederlandse Opstand\" href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nederlandse_Opstand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Opstand<\/a> vormden de opmaat tot de bloeitijd van Enkhuizen. In 1572 schaarde Enkhuizen zich als eerste Hollandse stad achter de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Willem_van_Oranje\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Willem van Oranje<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Als beloning voor het zich achter de prins scharen kreeg Enkhuizen in 1573 het zogeheten paalkistrecht, dat het overnam van het toen nog steeds koningsgezinde Amsterdam. Dit lucratieve privilege hield in dat Enkhuizen de <a title=\"Betonning\" href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Betonning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">betonning<\/a> op de gehele Zuiderzee mocht verzorgen, en als tegenprestatie belasting mocht heffen van alle schepen op de Zuiderzee.<\/p>\n<p>In 1603 opende de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vereenigde_Oostindische_Compagnie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie<\/a> hier kantoor, wat leidde tot zijn ontwikkeling tot een belangrijke maritieme haven. Aan het begin van de 17e eeuw telde de stad al 25.000 inwoners.<\/p>\n<p>Op de kaart zijn twee kerken uit de 15e eeuw prominent weergegeven: <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zuiderkerk_(Enkhuizen)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zuider- of Sint-Pancraskerk<\/a> (nr. 33) en de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Westerkerk_(Enkhuizen)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Westerkerk of Sint-Gommaruskerk<\/a> (nr. 2). Het stadhuis (nr. 45) werd in 1688 vervangen door een <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stadhuis_van_Enkhuizen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gebouw<\/a> dat was gemodelleerd naar het <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paleis_op_de_Dam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stadhuis van Amsterdam<\/a>. Op de kaart benadrukken de golven op de Zuiderzee en de windmolens de ligging van de stad aan het vaak stormachtige weer.<\/p>\n<p>De<em>\u00a0Civitates orbis terrarum<\/em>\u00a0was de eerste stedenatlas die ooit op de markt kwam. Hoewel het geen echte voorlopers had, bleek het werk direct in een behoefte te voorzien omdat het sociale, politieke en economische leven van die periode zich afspeelde in de steden. Het werd een van de bestsellers van de late zestiende eeuw. De zes delen waaruit het werk bestond, verschenen tussen 1572 en 1618; alleen het eerste deel vermeldt echter bovenstaande titel. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Georg_Braun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Georg Braun<\/a> (1541-1622), kanunnik van de kathedraal van Keulen, schreef het voorwoord bij de eerste vijf delen en ook de begeleidende tekst op de achterzijde van de plattegronden en stadsaanzichten. Veel materiaal voor dit stedenboek is afkomstig van de Antwerpse cartograaf <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abraham_Ortelius\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Abraham Ortelius<\/a>. Diens in 1570 verschenen <em>Theatrum orbis terrarum<\/em> heeft in een aantal opzichten model gestaan voor de\u00a0<em>Civitates<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Simon van den Neuvel (Novellanus),<a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frans_Hogenberg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Frans Hogenberg<\/a> en (zijn zoon?)
