After the painting by W. van de Velde in the year 1686, preserved in the <span class=\"mw-page-title-main\">Schreierstoren). <\/span>Etching by watchmaker and engraver <a href=\"https:\/\/m.ifthenisnow.nl\/nl\/personen\/willem-writs-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Willem Writs<\/a> (1732-1786) made in <strong>1771<\/strong> after a drawing by <strong>Isaak de Wit<\/strong> from 1770, which in turn was made after a painting by <strong>Willem van de Velde<\/strong> from 1686. Size (platemark) 27.3 x 41 cm (frame 45.3 x 58.5 cm).<\/p>\n<p>The scene shows the final return of &#8216;<em>De Gouden Leeuw<\/em>&#8216; (The Golden Lion) in 1686 to the port of Amsterdam. The ship is depicted in an imposing manner, with its billowing sails in the late afternoon light. In this portrayal, &#8216;<em>De Gouden Leeuw&#8217;<\/em> is thanked for its 20 years of service to the city and country.<\/p>\n<p>It was the flagship of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Admiralty_of_Amsterdam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Admiralty of Amsterdam<\/a>, which had gained great fame in the naval fleet of Admiral <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cornelis_Tromp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cornelis Tromp<\/a> in numerous naval battles, such as in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Third_Anglo-Dutch_War\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Third Anglo-Dutch War<\/a> (1672-&#8217;74). On the left, a salute is fired by the state yacht &#8216;Rotterdam&#8217;, while in the front, a yacht from the city of Amsterdam is sailing towards &#8216;<em>De Gouden Leeuw<\/em>&#8216;, and numerous small boats have arrived to bid it a final farewell. After the tribute, the ship would be dismantled.<\/p>\n<p>In the background, the skyline of Amsterdam is visible, particularly the eastern part of the harbour, where a large part of the port activities was concentrated at that time. Including shipbuilding; above the smoke plume of the salute is the tower of the &#8216;<span class=\"mw-page-title-main\"><em>Oost-Indisch Zeemagazijn<\/em>&#8216; (<\/span>Storehouse of the East India Company) on Oostenburg, where &#8216;<em>De Gouden Leeuw<\/em>&#8216; was launched in 1666.<\/p>\n<p>Other towers that we can recognize in this city profile are (from left to right): the tower of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oosterkerk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oosterkerk<\/a>, behind numerous ship masts the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Montelbaanstoren\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Montelbaan tower<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Schreierstoren\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Schreierstoren<\/a>, and just behind it, the tower of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zuiderkerk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zuiderkerk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/am.adlibhosting.com\/ais6v2\/imageapi\/wwwopac.ashx?command=getcontent&amp;server=images&amp;value=s_sa_7421_004.jpg&amp;folderId=38570&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;imageformat=jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">painting<\/a> now hangs in the Amsterdam Museum.<\/p>\n<p><em>Literature: A.E. d\u2019Ailly &#8211; Repertorium van de profielen der stad Amsterdam (1953), no. 147.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Price: SOLD<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cGezigt van een Gedeelte der Stad Amsterdam: Naar het Schildery van W. van de Velde Ao. 1686, Berustende in de Schryers Tooren. \/ Vue d\u2019une partie de la Ville d\u2019Amsterdam, d\u2019apr\u00e8s le Tableau de van de Velde en l\u2019ann\u00e9e 1686.\u201d (View of a part of the city of Amsterdam.
