Gesigneerd midden onder \u201c<em>jverheijen<\/em>\u201d. Afm. 38,3 x 47,4 cm.<\/p>\n<p>De <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Weerdpoort\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Weerdpoort<\/a>, die ook wel de Amsterdamse poort werd genoemd, lag aan het noordelijk uiteinde van de Oudegracht, waar der Oudegracht overgaat in de Vecht. De zware Weerdpoort maakte een kasteelachtige indruk. Ze was enige van de vier Utrechtse stadspoorten die tot het einde haar middeleeuwse vorm behield.<\/p>\n<p>De Weerdpoort bestond uit een hoofdpoort (overkapt met een leien zadeldak) die in \u00e9\u00e9n lijn lag met de stadsmuur. De doorgang van de hoofdpoort kon worden afgesloten met twee dubbele deuren. V\u00f3\u00f3r de hoofdpoort lag een voorpoort met twee ronde torens, die door vleugelmuren waren verboden met de hoofdpoort.<\/p>\n<p>De tekening geeft de Weerdpoort mooier weer dan hij in werkelijkheid was. In de 17<sup>e<\/sup>-eeuw was de poort al in verval en in 1833 werd hij gesloopt; de torens volgden in 1862. In de achtergrond zien we de huizen aan de Bemuurde Weerd Oostzijde<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jan_Hendrik_Verheijen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jan Hendrik Verheijen<\/a> (1778-1846) was opgeleid als notaris, maar koos op zijn 21e met toestemming van zijn ouders voor het kunstenaarschap en trad in de leer bij de Utrechtse rijtuig- en decoratieschilder Nicolaas Osti (1757-1801).<\/p>\n<p>Hoewel hij ook landschappen, kerkinterieurs en portretten maakte, werd Verheijen voornamelijk bekend als stadsschilder, vooral van Utrecht. Als thema koos hij veelal voor zeventiende- en achttiende-eeuwse huizen, vaak met middeleeuwse kerken of stadspoorten.
