Embossed with the <em>L&#8217;Estampe Moderne<\/em> stamp in the lower right margin. Size (print): 41 x 31 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Depicted is the biblical figure Salome, the daughter of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Herod_II\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Herod II<\/a> and princess <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Herodias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Herodias<\/a>, in a sensual and stylized manner characteristic of Alphonse Mucha&#8217;s distinct artistic style. The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gospel\">gospel<\/a> story of her dance at the birthday celebration of her stepfather <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Herod_Antipas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Herod Antipas<\/a>, who had <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beheading_of_John_the_Baptist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John the Baptist beheaded<\/a> at her mother&#8217;s request, inspired art, literature and music over an extended period of time.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fin_de_si%C3%A8cle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fin-de-si\u00e8cle<\/a> <\/em>Europe turned Salome into an obsession, parading her deadly dance in operas, ballets, poems, paintings, and more. Now characterized as poisonous and depraved, she was the perfect symbol of the culture&#8217;s decadent mood and its new wariness of female power. Alphonse Mucha&#8217;s Salome is erotic and exotic in her filmy costume and stylized hair, an Art Nouveau staple.
