Kopergravure vervaardigd door Johann Theodor de Bry<\/strong>, uitgegeven in 1719<\/strong> als deel van het \u201cViridarium \u00a0Reformatum<\/em>\u201d van de Duitse arts en natuuronderzoeker Michael Bernhard Valentini<\/strong>. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm.: 27 x 17 cm.<\/p>\n

In het begin van de 18e eeuw waren narcissen een populaire bloem die veel werd gekweekt. Hoewel er al zo’n 70 soorten bekend waren, ontstonden in deze periode door plantenveredeling de eerste gecultiveerde vari\u00ebteiten.<\/p>\n

We zien hier de plant in detail, met nauwkeurige weergave van de kenmerkende trompetvormige bloemkelk en de langwerpige bladeren. De waardering voor de elegante narcissenbloemen. Deze illustraties getuigen van de fascinatie voor deze bijzondere lentebloemen aan het begin van de 18e eeuw.<\/p>\n

Het \u201cViridarium\u00a0 Reformatum, seu Regnum Vegetable<\/a>\u201d <\/em>(de herziene tuin, ofwel rijk van de planten) \u00a0is een kruidenboek<\/a> met gravures van planten, verdeeld over 16 delen. De afbeeldingen tonen zowel inheemse als exotische planten, waaronder tulpen, lelies en andere bloemen. De nauwkeurige illustraties en beschrijvingen maakten het mogelijk om planten beter te identificeren en te bestuderen en werd gebruikt door artsen, apothekers en botanici in die tijd.<\/p>\n

Michael Bernhard Valentini<\/a> (1657-1729), een Duitse arts, professor in de geneeskunde en verzamelaar van naturalia, gebruikte veel platen van het in 1641 uitgeven Florilegium renovatum et auctum<\/em> van Johann Theodor de Bry<\/a> en diens schoonszoon Matthaeus Merian<\/a> en maakte daarmee van zijn “botanische bibliotheek” met 1600 gravures ook een kunstzinnig meesterwerk.<\/p>\n
