\u201cUittogt van zes honderd gewapende Amsterdamsche Burgeren na Utrecht<\/em><\/strong>\u201c. Kopergravure vervaardigd door Jan Evert Grave<\/strong><\/a> naar een tekening van Geerling Grijpmoed<\/strong><\/a> en uitgegeven door Albrecht Borchers<\/strong> in 1788<\/strong>. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. 31 x 45 cm.<\/p>\n

Onder het toeziend oog van het toegestroomd publiek bij herberg de Berebijt<\/a> aan de Amstel, vertrekken zeshonderd Amsterdamse burgers op 17 juli 1787 uit Amsterdam naar Utrecht, om daar het patriottenleger aan te vullen.<\/p>\n

Deze gebeurtenis vond plaats tijdens de zogenaamde Patriottenopstand, een periode in Nederland waarin patriotten, die democratisering en meer volksinvloed nastreefden, in conflict kwamen met de Prinsgezinden, de aanhangers van stadhouder Willem V.<\/p>\n

De patriotten waren voorstanders van hervormingen en wilden de macht van de stadhouder inperken. Utrecht was in die tijd een bolwerk van patriottische activiteiten en weerstand tegen het regime van Willem V.<\/a><\/p>\n

De gewapende burgers waren veelal lid van excercitiegenootschappen<\/a> of \u2018vrijkorpsen\u2019 die tijdens de Patriottentijd ontstonden. De mannen uit Amsterdam sloten zich aan om te helpen de patriottische idealen te verdedigen, maar hun inzet werd uiteindelijk verhinderd door de komst van een Pruisisch leger<\/a> dat de Prinsgezinden steunde.<\/p>\n
