Smulders, 1879"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201c<strong>Chromo Lithographische kaart \u2019S Gravenhage en omstreken \u2013 Leiden, Delft, De Katwijken, Hazerswoude, Bergschenhoek, \u2019s Gravezande enz.<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0 met aan de verso zijde een \u201c<strong>Kaart van \u2019s-Gravenhage en Scheveningen<\/strong>\u201d, lithografie\u00ebn vervaardigd in <strong>1879<\/strong> door <strong>J. Smulders &amp; Co.<\/strong> Afm.: ca. 53 x 71,5 (verso Den Haag en Scheveningen: ca. 53 x 51 cm).<\/p>\n<p>Deze kaarten bieden een mooi inzicht in de transformatie van Den Haag aan het eind van de 19e eeuw. Als regeringscentrum van het jonge Koninkrijk der Nederlanden groeide de stad snel na de Napoleontische oorlogen (1803\/5-1815). De bevolking verdubbelde bijna tussen 1815 en 1873, wat leidde tot een enorme vraag naar huisvesting en ruimte binnen de stad. Die vond men door eenvoudige arbeidershuisjes op binnenplaatsen en achterterreinen te bouwen.<\/p>\n<p>De komst van de eerste spoorlijn in 1839 en de opening van het station Hollands Spoor in 1843 gaven Den Haag een belangrijke economische impuls. Rondom dit station vestigden zich al snel fabrieken en bedrijven, wat de stad een industri\u00eble uitstraling gaf en nieuwe werkgelegenheid bracht. Ook het stadsvervoer begon zich te ontwikkelen: in 1864 reed de eerste <a href=\"https:\/\/hovm.nl\/paardentram\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paardentram naar Scheveningen<\/a>, wat de mobiliteit van de inwoners sterk verbeterde.<\/p>\n<p>De nabijgelegen steden en dorpen werden door deze vernieuwingen steeds nauwer met Den Haag verbonden. Scheveningen groeide uit tot een belangrijke badplaats die via de paardentram voor meer Hagenaars bereikbaar werd. In Delft bloeide de industrie en werden nieuwe verbindingen met Den Haag aangelegd, wat de handelsmogelijkheden vergrootte. Leiden, ten noorden van de stad, bleef een belangrijk cultureel en wetenschappelijk centrum, met goede verbindingen naar Den Haag dankzij de nieuwe spoorlijnen.<\/p>\n<p>Welgestelde burgers en ambtenaren vestigden zich in Den Haag stad dankzij de aanwezigheid van nationale bestuursorganen. Voor hen werd in 1855 Willemspark aangelegd, een chique woonwijk met statige landhuizen. Rond dezelfde tijd werden diverse grachten gedempt, wat niet alleen meer ruimte bood voor verkeer, maar ook het straatbeeld moderniseerde.<\/p>\n<p>Leuk om te lezen is de legenda op de verso zijde naast de \u201cKaart van \u2019s-Gravenhage en Scheveningen\u201d.
