Coloured by a later hand. Size: 17,8 x 13 cm.<\/p>\n<p>The Dutch lion <span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"\" title=\"\">is a household name. <\/span><span class=\"\" title=\"\">The animal symbolizes the strength and courage of the Low Countries.<\/span> <span class=\"\" title=\"\">The lion plays an important role in football in our present time, but the depiction of the Netherlands as a lion was introduced in difficult times, at the end of the 16th century, when the Netherlands were fighting the <a title=\"Eighty Years' War\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eighty_Years%27_War\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eighty Years&#8217; War<\/a> for independence against <\/span><span class=\"\" title=\"\">the Spaniards. From 1583 onwards, a number of maps with the Netherlands in the form of a lion came on the market.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"\" title=\"\">The lion map not only functioned as a useful map, but was often hung on the wall as a statement.<\/span> It was <span class=\"\" title=\"\">an expression of active citizenship, of pride, of self-awareness and often served as a spectacular piece in the house of a merchant or government building.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"\" title=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gallia_Belgica\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Gallia Belgica<\/em><\/a> was the northern part of Gaul between the Seine and the Rhine in Roman times.<\/span> <span class=\"\" title=\"\">As a Latin name, <em>Belgica<\/em> later became synonymous with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seventeen_Provinces\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Seventeen Provinces<\/a> and the Low Countries.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This <em>Leo Belgicus<\/em> was engraved by an anonymous engraver who made this plate as the title page for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Famiano_Strada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Famiano Strada<\/a>\u00b4s book on the Eigthy Years&#8217; War.<\/p>\n<p><em>Reference: \u201cLeo Belgicus &#8211; An illustrated and annotated carto-bibliography\u201d (2006) by H.A.M. van der Heijden, no. 12.1<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Price: 850,-<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LEO BELGICUS &#8211; LION MAP OF THE DUTCH REPUBLIC &#8220;Novus XVII Inferioris Germaniae Provinciarum&#8220;, copper engraving published in Leiden 1643 by Jacques Marcus as part of Famiano Strada\u00b4s De Bello Belgico [of the war in the Low Countries].
