Etching and engraving made for <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johannes_Janssonius\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"206\" data-end=\"278\">Johannes Janssonius<\/a>\u2019 town book, published in Amsterdam in 1657. This example is the second of three states of the copperplate and was published in <strong data-start=\"452\" data-end=\"460\">1682<\/strong> by the <strong data-start=\"468\" data-end=\"514\" data-is-only-node=\"\">heirs of Johannes Janssonius van Waesberge<\/strong> in the town book <em data-start=\"532\" data-end=\"609\">Tooneel der vermaarste koop-steden en handelsplaatsen van de geheele wereld<\/em>. Coloured by a later hand. Size approx. 39.5 \u00d7 50.5 cm.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"662\" data-end=\"1233\">In this second state, the originally rather austere map was enriched with elaborate decoration. To the left of the cartouche containing the key appears the goddess of wisdom, <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Minerva\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"837\" data-end=\"885\">Minerva<\/a>, identifiable by her helmet and spear. Along the lower edge, a lively rural scene was added, with a country house, a horse-drawn carriage, horsemen and hunting dogs. The new decoration at lower right was executed by the \u2018plate engraver\u2019 <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dbnl.org\/tekst\/molh003nieu01_01\/molh003nieu01_01_0412.php\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"1123\" data-end=\"1220\"><strong data-start=\"1124\" data-end=\"1148\">Johan van den Aveele<\/strong><\/a> (1655\u20131727).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1235\" data-end=\"1778\">The actual map was re-engraved after <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/inter-antiquariaat.nl\/antiek\/stadsplattegronden\/andere-nederlandse-steden\/utrecht-blaeu-1649\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"1272\" data-end=\"1394\">Joan Blaeu\u2019s plan<\/a> <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/inter-antiquariaat.nl\/en\/antiques\/city-plans\/other-dutch-cities-city-plans\/utrecht-joan-blaeu-1649\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"1395\" data-end=\"1520\"><em data-start=\"1396\" data-end=\"1416\">Traiectum Wttrecht<\/em><\/a>, which appeared in his town atlas in 1649. Its topographical basis, however, is older. The image shown on this Janssonius map largely corresponds to the situation in 1618, although Blaeu\u2019s model also incorporates information dating from the years 1642\u20131644.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1780\" data-end=\"2027\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The key with 26 numbered references \u2014 including several corrupted German forms of the place names \u2014 was derived from yet another map, made by <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Matth%C3%A4us_Merian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"1922\" data-end=\"1991\">Matth\u00e4us Merian<\/a> and published in Frankfurt in 1647.<\/p>\n<p><em>Literature; Kaarten van Utrecht, Marijke Donkersloot-de Vrij (Uitg.
