Blaeu<\/strong><\/a>, as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lodovico_Guicciardini\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lodovico Guicciardini<\/a>\u2019s <em data-start=\"164\" data-end=\"241\">Beschrijvinghe van alle de Nederlanden anderssins ghenoemt Neder-Duytslandt<\/em>. Size: 23.5 \u00d7 32 cm.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"286\" data-end=\"836\">In the title cartouche at lower left, Groningen is described as a prosperous and populous city of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frisia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Frisia<\/a>, strongly fortified against enemy attacks. The cartographer <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ptolemy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ptolemy<\/a> (c. AD 87\u2013150) of Alexandria is said to have called it <em data-start=\"514\" data-end=\"523\">Phileum<\/em>. According to the (fictitious) chronicler Humbaldus, the city was founded as early as 377 BC by the legendary Grunno, the brother of King Anthenor of the Franks. Such references to classical and legendary origins were common in early modern urban literature, emphasizing the antiquity and prestige of the city.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"838\" data-end=\"1359\">The map itself shows Groningen in bird\u2019s-eye perspective, encircled by canals and fortifications. At upper left is the city\u2019s coat of arms with the double-headed eagle. The city is dominated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/inter-antiquariaat.nl\/en\/antiques\/city-views\/other-dutch-cities\/groningen-grote-markt-1810-1821\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grote Markt<\/a> with the town hall and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martinikerk_(Groningen)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Martinikerk<\/a>, and by the Vismarkt with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Der_Aa-kerk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A-kerk<\/a>. Both churches date back to the 13th century but were extensively altered and expanded in the 15th century. The Martinikerk is accompanied by the 97-meter-high Martinitoren, popularly known as \u201c<em>d\u2019Olle Grieze<\/em>\u201d [the Old Grey One].<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1361\" data-end=\"1745\">Thanks to its strategic location, Groningen grew into an important commercial hub in the 13th century. In 1282 the city joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hanseatic_League\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hanseatic League<\/a>, attracting many merchants. After a period of Habsburg rule (from 1536), Groningen was incorporated in 1594 into the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dutch_Republic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dutch Republic<\/a>.
