Size: 41.9 \u00d7 32.3 cm.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"288\" data-end=\"723\">This finely engraved plan depicts Batavia (present-day Jakarta) in its 18th-century form, with the regular urban layout established by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dutch_East_India_Company\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dutch East India Company<\/a> (VOC) according to Dutch town-planning principles. At the centre runs <em data-start=\"546\" data-end=\"563\">The Great River<\/em> (the Ciliwung), dividing the city into two parts and flowing through the harbour into the Bay of Batavia, where a Dutch <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/East_Indiaman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">East Indiaman<\/a> is shown at anchor.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"725\" data-end=\"1196\">In the north-west corner lies the Castle of Batavia, the administrative and military headquarters of the VOC in Asia. The legend lists, among others, the <em data-start=\"883\" data-end=\"900\">General\u2019s House<\/em>, the <em data-start=\"906\" data-end=\"942\">Apartments of the Council of India<\/em>, and the four bastions <em data-start=\"966\" data-end=\"975\">Diamond<\/em>, <em data-start=\"977\" data-end=\"983\">Ruby<\/em>, <em data-start=\"985\" data-end=\"995\">Sapphire<\/em>, and <em data-start=\"1001\" data-end=\"1008\">Pearl<\/em>. The city gates, canals, and \u201cpoints\u201d (bastions) are named after Dutch towns and provinces: <em data-start=\"1101\" data-end=\"1112\">Rotterdam<\/em>, <em data-start=\"1114\" data-end=\"1126\">Middelburg<\/em>, <em data-start=\"1128\" data-end=\"1137\">Zeeland<\/em>, <em data-start=\"1139\" data-end=\"1148\">Utrecht<\/em>, <em data-start=\"1150\" data-end=\"1162\">Gelderland<\/em>, <em data-start=\"1164\" data-end=\"1173\">Holland<\/em>, and <em data-start=\"1179\" data-end=\"1193\">Nassau Point<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1198\" data-end=\"1567\">The legend also provides detailed references to quarters and canals: <em data-start=\"1267\" data-end=\"1275\">Tygers<\/em>, <em data-start=\"1277\" data-end=\"1285\">Leeuwe<\/em>, <em data-start=\"1287\" data-end=\"1295\">Groene<\/em>, <em data-start=\"1297\" data-end=\"1306\">Malabar<\/em>, and <em data-start=\"1312\" data-end=\"1330\">Amboinsche Canal<\/em>, as well as the <em data-start=\"1347\" data-end=\"1366\">Bandanese Quarter<\/em> and <em data-start=\"1371\" data-end=\"1388\">Malabar Quarter<\/em>. Other entries include the <em data-start=\"1416\" data-end=\"1442\">Stadt-House or Guildhall<\/em>, <em data-start=\"1444\" data-end=\"1456\">New Church<\/em>, <em data-start=\"1458\" data-end=\"1468\">Hospital<\/em>, <em data-start=\"1470\" data-end=\"1505\">Chinese Yard for Building Vessels<\/em>, <em data-start=\"1507\" data-end=\"1520\">Fish Market<\/em>, and the <em data-start=\"1530\" data-end=\"1564\">Bridewell or House of Correction<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1569\" data-end=\"1901\">The map\u2019s geometric plan reflects the Dutch ideal of order and rationality imposed upon a tropical landscape that the Company sought to control through canals, dikes, and fortifications. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Batavia was hailed as the \u201cQueen of the East\u201d \u2014 the administrative and commercial centre of the VOC empire.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1903\" data-end=\"2393\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Herman_Moll\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Herman Moll <\/a>(c. 1654\u20131732), German-born but active in London, was one of the foremost cartographers of the early 18th century. He began his career as an engraver for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moses_Pitt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moses Pitt <\/a>on the ill-fated <em data-start=\"2105\" data-end=\"2120\">English Atlas<\/em> \u2014 a grand project that ultimately bankrupted Pitt. Moll also engraved for Sir Jonas Moore, Grenville Collins, John Adair, and the firm of Seller &amp; Price. By the early 1680s he was publishing his own maps, and by the 1690s he had established his own shop.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2395\" data-end=\"2992\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Moll\u2019s work soon earned him a place among a lively circle of intellectuals and adventurers who met at Jonathan\u2019s Coffee House, 20 Exchange Alley, Cornhill \u2014 also a hub for early stock traders. His acquaintances included the scientist <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Hooke\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert Hooke<\/a>, the antiquarian <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Stukeley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William Stukeley<\/a>, the writers <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jonathan_Swift\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jonathan Swift<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Daniel_Defoe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Defoe<\/a>, and the sharp-minded privateers <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Dampier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William Dampier<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Woodes_Rogers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Woodes Rogers<\/a>, and cartographer <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Hack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William Hacke<\/a>.
