Size: 31 \u00d7 27 cm.<\/p>\n<p>This map shows the route of the first official British embassy to China, led by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Macartney,_1st_Earl_Macartney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lord George Macartney<\/a>, which in 1793 traveled from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chengde\">Chengde<\/a> (\u201c<em>Zhe-Hol<\/em>\u201d) in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tartary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tartary<\/a> via Beijng to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hangzhou\">Hangzhou<\/a> (\u201c<em>Hang-Choe-Foo<\/em>\u201d). The embassy aimed to establish diplomatic and commercial relations with the Chinese Empire but was ultimately dismissed by the court of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Qianlong_Emperor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emperor Qianlong <\/a>without success.<\/p>\n<p>After their audience with Emperor Qianlong at his summer palace in Chengde, the delegation departed Peking in October 1793, following the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grand_Canal_(China)\">Grand Canal <\/a>southward. Passing through Tianjin, Jinan, Xuzhou, Yangzhou, and Nanjing, they reached Hangzhou on 8 November 1793, after a month of travel. Covering a distance of roughly 1,850 kilometers, the journey took about thirty-one days and became one of the most remarkable diplomatic expeditions to China of the eighteenth century.<\/p>\n<p>Although the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Macartney_Embassy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Macartney Embassy <\/a>returned to London without securing any concessions from China, the mission can still be regarded as a partial success, as it yielded a wealth of detailed observations and descriptions of the Chinese Empire. The map itself records some of these vivid details (in Dutch): \u201c<em>A large area around Peking produces pulses and fruit.<\/em>\u201d \u2014 \u201c<em>From Peking to Tong-chang-foe<\/em> (Dongchangfu), <em>the land is very flat, and not a single stone is to be found.<\/em>\u201d \u2014 \u201c<em>Boundless fields of grain and cotton stretch along both banks of the river.<\/em>\u201d \u2014 \u201c<em>The people living around these lakes live solely by fishing; they are the ones who train the Chinese water raven<\/em> (cormorant).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Price: Euro
