Size: (print).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"504\" data-end=\"730\">The scenes take place in the Portuguese synagogue in The Hague, recognizable by its monumental interior with high windows, austere wall surfaces, heavy candle stands, and the characteristic <em data-start=\"698\" data-end=\"705\">bimah<\/em> with wooden balustrades.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"732\" data-end=\"1062\">In the first engraving we see the Priestly Blessing (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Priestly_Blessing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Birkat Kohanim<\/a>). The <em data-start=\"810\" data-end=\"819\">kohanim<\/em>\u2014members of the priestly caste who, according to tradition, are direct descendants of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aaron\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aaron<\/a>\u2014stand at the front of the synagogue, their heads and hands covered with the prayer shawl (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tallit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em data-start=\"1001\" data-end=\"1009\">tallit<\/em><\/a>), as required during the recitation of the blessing.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1064\" data-end=\"1435\">In the centre stands the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Synagogue#Bimah\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bimah <\/a>(the platform from which the Torah is read), surrounded by men who also wear <em data-start=\"1176\" data-end=\"1186\">tallitot<\/em>. The Priestly Blessing is recited with the priests facing the congregation and with their backs toward the Holy Ark, while the congregants turn away or cover themselves so as not to look directly at the priestly hands at the moment of the blessing.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1437\" data-end=\"1791\">In the second engraving we see the Sabbath ceremony. The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hazzan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em data-start=\"1498\" data-end=\"1506\">chazan<\/em> <\/a>displays the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Law_of_Moses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Law of Moses<\/a> to the congregation and proclaims: \u201cThis is the Law which Moses set before the children of Israel.\u201d A <em data-start=\"1635\" data-end=\"1642\">kohen<\/em> reads first, followed by a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tribe_of_Levi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em data-start=\"1670\" data-end=\"1676\">levi<\/em><\/a>, and then other members of the community. After the reading, the <em data-start=\"1742\" data-end=\"1750\">chazan<\/em> lifts the scroll and gives the blessing.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1793\" data-end=\"2153\">In the foreground we see various figures\u2014both adults and children\u2014taking part in or observing the ritual. Their presence underscores the social and intergenerational character of the service.
