Size: 34.2 \u00d7 40.6 cm.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"286\" data-end=\"731\">In the final two decades of the eighteenth century, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dutch_Republic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dutch Republic<\/a> was marked by severe political unrest. This was the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Patriottentijd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">era of the Patriots<\/a> and their opponents, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Orangism_(Dutch_Republic)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Orangists<\/a>. Tensions culminated in a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prussian_invasion_of_Holland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prussian intervention in 1787<\/a> in support of the stadholder, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_V,_Prince_of_Orange\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William V<\/a>, followed by a French invasion in 1794. With French backing, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Batavian_Republic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Batavian Republic<\/a> was proclaimed in 1795, bringing an end to the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"733\" data-end=\"1365\">At the centre of this revolutionary allegory stands the <em data-start=\"789\" data-end=\"803\">\u201cDutch Seat\u201d<\/em> (<em data-start=\"805\" data-end=\"826\">Nederlandsche Zetel<\/em>), the empty throne of the old order, guarded by a lion and now claimed by the citizen. At the direction of the personification of Liberty\u2014identifiable by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pike_(weapon)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pike<\/a> topped with a liberty cap\u2014he ascends the seat, not as a monarch, but as a representative of the people. The legitimacy of this transfer of power is made explicit: above the scene, three hovering genii display the fundamental articles upon which the citizen swears his oath\u2014<em data-start=\"1263\" data-end=\"1282\">the Rights of Man<\/em>, <em data-start=\"1284\" data-end=\"1327\">the Abolition of All Hereditary Dignities<\/em>, and <em data-start=\"1333\" data-end=\"1364\">the Sovereignty of the People<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1367\" data-end=\"1901\">The inscription beneath the image stresses that this authority is not acquired arbitrarily, but rests upon voluntary consent and devotion to the common good. To the left appear the crafts, agriculture, and the liberal arts, symbolising the productive forces of the nation, united around the seat of power in harmony and hope for a better future. Their union and expectation are proclaimed by the trumpet-blowing <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pheme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fame<\/a> on the right, while the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cornucopia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cornucopia<\/a> in the foreground signifies the abundance resulting from this new political order.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1903\" data-end=\"2149\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">On the right in the foreground, an armed warrior breaks the yoke of oppression, a direct reference to the casting off of tyranny and old constraints.
