This nautical chart depicts the south-western delta of the Dutch Republic<\/a>, from the mouth of the River Maas to the Wielingen near the border with the Southern Netherlands. In the seventeenth century this region consisted of a complex network of islands, sandbanks, channels, and tidal waters. Walcheren, Zuid-Beveland, and Schouwen appear as separate landmasses within a landscape still strongly shaped by sea incursions and continuous sedimentation. For navigation, this area formed one of the most intricate and hazardous coastal zones of the North Sea.<\/p>\n

The chart is a typical “paskaart<\/em>,” designed for practical navigation. This is evident from the dense network of rhumb lines<\/a> radiating across the map from several compass roses. These allowed sailors to determine their course in relation to the directions of the wind. Equally important are the numerous soundings and the carefully delineated sandbanks and shoals, such as the Banjaart (\u201csteep on all sides\u201d), as well as the extensive shallows off the coasts of Walcheren and Schouwen. In a region where channels and banks were constantly shifting, up-to-date knowledge of these hazards was essential.<\/p>\n

In addition to hydrographic information, the chart also shows the principal harbour towns and fortified places, including Middelburg, Vlissingen, Veere, and Zierikzee. These cities played an important role in the maritime infrastructure of the Dutch Republic. Vlissingen and Veere in particular served as major departure ports for international shipping. Off the coast of Walcheren lay heavily used anchorages where ships waited for a pilot to guide them up the Western Scheldt to Antwerp or to continue their voyage toward the ports of Holland.<\/p>\n

The map appeared in the famous pilot guide De Nieuwe Groote Ligtende Zee-Fakkel<\/em>. This work combined charts with coastal profiles and nautical sailing directions and was regarded as one of the most important navigational publications of the late seventeenth century.<\/p>\n

Johannes van Keulen (1654\u20131715) was the founder of an influential Amsterdam publishing house specializing in nautical cartography. Around 1678 he established himself in Amsterdam as a bookseller, instrument maker, and publisher of sea charts and navigational instruments. In collaboration with the mathematician and chartmaker Claas Janszoon Vooght, he began publishing the five-volume Nieuwe Groote Ligtende Zee-Fakkel<\/em> in 1681, an extensive pilot guide containing charts of the principal sea routes of Europe and beyond. The work soon became a standard reference for seafarers and confirmed Van Keulen\u2019s reputation as one of the leading nautical publishers of his time.<\/p>\n

The Van Keulen firm remained active for several generations. After Johannes\u2019s death, his son Gerard van Keulen and later family members continued the business, ensuring that the name Van Keulen remained associated with the production of nautical charts and sea atlases well into the nineteenth century.<\/p>\n
