Colour offset print published in <strong>1972<\/strong> by <a href=\"https:\/\/publishers.com.bd\/AhmedPublishingHouse\/About\/\"><strong>Ahmed Publishing House<\/strong><\/a>. Size: 76 \u00d7 50.5 cm.<\/p>\n<p>This map belongs to the earliest cartographic productions of independent Bangladesh, which emerged in December 1971 following its secession from Pakistan and a violent <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bangladesh_Liberation_War\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">war of independence<\/a>. The choice of a \u201ccommunications\u201d map is telling: in a newly formed state, the restoration and organization of infrastructure\u2014roads, railways, and air connections\u2014were of crucial importance for administrative control, economic reconstruction, and national integration.<\/p>\n<p>The map depicts the entire territory of Bangladesh, bordered by India (West Bengal and Assam) and Burma (Myanmar), with to the south the vast Ganges\u2013Brahmaputra delta and the coastline along the Bay of Bengal. This fluvial landscape, with its countless branches and islands (chars), fundamentally shapes the infrastructure: waterways and ferry connections are as essential here as roads and railways.<\/p>\n<p>Roads\u2014distinguished as metalled (paved) and unmetalled (unpaved)\u2014and railway lines are clearly indicated. Within the railway network, a distinction is made between <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Broad-gauge_railway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">broad gauge<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metre-gauge_railway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">metre gauge<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Narrow-gauge_railway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">narrow gauge<\/a>, reflecting the fragmented development of the British colonial railway system. Emphasis is placed on connections between the principal urban centres, including Dacca (Dhaka), Chittagong, Khulna, Rajshahi, and Sylhet.
