Sheet size: 30.3 \u00d7 42.6 cm.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"548\" data-end=\"791\">Striking &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nagasaki-e\"><em data-start=\"557\" data-end=\"569\">Nagasaki-e<\/em><\/a>&#8216; depicting Dutch merchants at table on <a href=\"https:\/\/inter-antiquariaat.nl\/en\/antiques\/sold\/dejima-after-gerrits-voogt-1736\/\">Dejima<\/a>, the small artificial island in <a href=\"https:\/\/inter-antiquariaat.nl\/en\/antiques\/city-plans\/foreign-cities\/nagasaki-dejima-1778\/\">Nagasaki harbour<\/a> to which the Dutch were confined as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nagasaki-e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Japan\u2019s only permitted Western trading partners<\/a> from 1641 until the mid-nineteenth century.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"793\" data-end=\"1128\">Five Dutchmen are shown dining at a formally laid table, seated on high-backed chairs\u2014an arresting detail for a Japanese audience\u2014several marked with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dutch_East_India_Company\">Dutch East India Company<\/a> (VOC) monogram. The scene is rich in carefully observed and subtly exaggerated \u2018Western\u2019 traits: the use of cutlery, glassware, and the conspicuous presence of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spittoon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spittoons<\/a> on the floor.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1130\" data-end=\"1365\">They are attended by two enslaved servants from the Indonesian archipelago, rendered as integral to the Dutch household. One pours gin, while the other presents a dish, reinforcing the theatricality and perceived luxury of the setting.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1367\" data-end=\"1764\">Produced for the local market, <em data-start=\"1398\" data-end=\"1410\">Nagasaki-e<\/em> catered to a sustained fascination with the so-called \u2018red-haired barbarians\u2019 (<em data-start=\"1490\" data-end=\"1499\">k\u014dm\u014djin<\/em>), whose appearance and customs were at once exotic and only partially understood.
