Size (plate mark): 28.6 \u00d7 38.1 cm.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"355\" data-end=\"678\">Following the successes of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Privateer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">privateers<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dutch_West_India_Company\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Dutch West India Company<\/span><\/span> <\/a>(WIC) in 1627 and 1628\u2014including the capture of the Spanish silver fleet by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Piet_Pieterszoon_Hein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Piet Hein<\/span><\/span> <\/a>in 1628\u2014the Company acquired sufficient capital to further challenge the colonial dominance of the Portuguese and Spanish.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"680\" data-end=\"1310\">In early 1629, the WIC resolved to first seize the Portuguese possessions in northeastern Brazil. The northern coast offered an excellent base for <a href=\"https:\/\/inter-antiquariaat.nl\/en\/antiques\/sold\/spanish-treasure-fleet-bay-of-matanzas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attacks on the Spanish treasure fleets<\/a> and was the center of sugar production. In 1630, an expeditionary force of 67 ships and 7,000 men under Admiral <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hendrick_Lonck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Hendrick Lonck<\/span><\/span> <\/a>and Colonel <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Diederick van Waerdenburgh<\/span><\/span> captured several fortifications around Recife and Olinda from the Portuguese. Despite these rapid and relatively easy victories along the coast, the Dutch failed to conquer the entire Portuguese colony, leaving the Portuguese a persistent threat.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1312\" data-end=\"1740\">In 1631, a Spanish-Portuguese armada was repelled during the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Abrolhos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Battle of Recife<\/a>, yet in the interior the Portuguese continued to resist for years. Supported by reinforcements from the Dutch Republic and defections from the Portuguese side, Van Waerdenburgh\u2014by then appointed governor\u2014was able to conquer several captaincies in the northeast, ultimately controlling the coastline from Rio Grande to Cabo de Santo Agostinho by 1634.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1742\" data-end=\"2015\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The etching depicts the Brazilian coast with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Forte_dos_Reis_Magos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Forte dos Reis Magos<\/a> at the mouth of the Rio Grande River (present-day Rio Potenji). Following its capture in December 1633, the fortress was renamed Fort Keulen.
