MEDIEVAL CHOIRBOOK LEAF FOR THE FEAST OF ST JOHN THE EVANGELIST, CA. 1300–1325

“Valde honorandus est beatus Iohannes…”, large illuminated manuscript leaf from an antiphonary (choirbook), probably made in Tuscany, ca. 1300–1325. Latin manuscript in brown and red ink and opaque pigments on parchment, with Gregorian square notation. Size (parchment) ca. 50.5 × 36.5 cm (frame: 69.5 × 54 cm).

The leaf originally formed part of a monumental antiphonary, a choirbook containing the chants for the Divine Office. Such books were produced for churches and monasteries during the Middle Ages and could be of impressive dimensions. During services they were placed on a large lectern, allowing several singers to read the words and music simultaneously.

These choirbooks were therefore not merely functional objects, but costly works made with great care. The text was written on parchment by professional scribes, while rubrics, decorated initials and foliate ornament could be added separately. Script, musical notation and decoration together form a carefully balanced whole. The large coloured initials in particular marked the beginning of important chants while at the same time giving the page its decorative character.

This leaf belongs to the Office for the feast of St John the Evangelist, celebrated on 27 December. At the top is the end of the verse:

“…[In medi]o ecclesie aperuit os eius et impleuit eum spiritu sapientie et intellectus. Et exal[tavit].”

It belongs to the responsory Cibavit illum Dominus pane vitae… from Matins. Halfway down the leaf, the red rubric “Ad laudes et p(er) horas diei. a(ntiphona)” introduces the antiphon for Lauds and the subsequent canonical hours.

A large decorated initial V opens the following antiphon:

“Valde honorandus est beatus Iohannes qui supra pectus domini in cena recubuit”,

meaning: “Highly worthy of honour is blessed John, who reclined upon the breast of the Lord at supper.” The words refer to John as the beloved disciple of Christ, who according to the Gospel reclined beside him during the Last Supper.

The initial is composed of pink, orange-red and blue bands set against a deep blue field embellished with fine white linework. Within the letter, stylised foliage unfolds in soft green, blue, pink, orange-red and greyish white. From the initial springs a long, gracefully curling foliate tendril extending down the left margin, with curled leaves in the same vivid colours. The ornament lends a lively character to the otherwise rigorously ordered page.

The combination of its large format, Gothic Rotunda script, seven four-line red musical staves and, above all, its colourful foliate decoration closely relates the leaf to Tuscan choirbooks of the early fourteenth century. During this period, substantial numbers of richly decorated choirbooks were produced for churches and monasteries in Florence and other religious centres in Tuscany.

After such manuscripts had lost their original liturgical function, many choirbooks were dismantled in later centuries. Today, their individual leaves are valued above all as works of art in their own right: tangible survivals of medieval book production in which calligraphy, music and illumination come together.
