Size (paper) 18.3 \u00d7 30.3 cm.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"264\" data-end=\"651\">Along a woodland path rises an imposing, heavily ruined pleasure palace. Overgrown walls, crumbling towers and a row of tall round-arched windows stand out against the sky. The architecture does not appear to represent a recognisable existing building, but rather to have been composed as an imaginary ruin. To the right, the view opens into the distance across a quiet, hilly landscape.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"653\" data-end=\"825\">In front of the ruin, three soldiers meet. Two soldiers on foot carry long guns with fixed bayonets. Facing them, a mounted soldier has come to a halt, possibly an officer.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"827\" data-end=\"1318\">The combination of soldiers, horses and a dramatic landscape accords well with the work of <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dirk_Langendijk?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"918\" data-end=\"982\">Dirk Langendijk<\/a> (1748\u20131805), who became particularly known for his drawings of soldiers, horsemen, military encampments and military events. Although much of his work relates to historical events of his own time, his compositions were not necessarily topographically accurate. He also used composed or imaginary landscapes as settings for his figures.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1320\" data-end=\"1743\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The paper bears a \u2018Pro Patria\u2019 watermark, showing the <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dutch_Maiden?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"1378\" data-end=\"1436\">Dutch Maiden<\/a> and the Dutch lion within the so-called <a class=\"decorated-link cursor-pointer\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"1477\" data-end=\"1558\">Garden of Holland<\/a>.
