This example in the second state, published by Cornelis Danckerts around 1700. Coloured by a later hand. Size approx. 60 × 53 cm.

This rare and highly decorative world map presents the Earth in an unusual way: not divided into two hemispheres, as on most world maps of the period, but within a single large circle centred on the North Pole. Europe, Asia, Africa and America are arranged around the pole, while the southern parts of the continents extend towards the outer edge of the circle.

Robyn employed an azimuthal equidistant projection, in which the parallels of latitude are drawn as equally spaced concentric circles. Distances measured from the North Pole are accurately represented, but the shapes of the continents become increasingly distorted towards the south. South America, Australia and New Zealand in particular acquire remarkably elongated forms. This unusual representation of the world reflects the cartographic experiments of the seventeenth century, including those of the French astronomer Jean-Dominique Cassini.

The map contains several geographical curiosities that reveal how incomplete knowledge of the world still was at the end of the seventeenth century. California is depicted as a large island, with an almost straight northern coastline. Only one large lake is shown in the Great Lakes region of North America. Along the eastern coast of North America, the name Nieu Nederland (New Netherland) still appears, although the Dutch colony had already been captured by the English in 1664. The city of New Amsterdam was then renamed New York. In South America, the legendary lakes Parime Lacus and Xarayes are depicted, while the coastlines of Australia and New Zealand remain only partially known. Australia is also still shown connected to New Guinea.

The circular map is surrounded by exceptionally rich mythological and allegorical decoration. At the top, putti are busy with a sounding lead and a pair of dividers. On the left sits Juno, queen of the gods, wearing a crown and accompanied by her peacock. Behind her stretches an arc displaying the signs of the zodiac. On the right appears Jupiter, king of the gods, holding his thunderbolts and sceptre, with his eagle beside him. Together, they symbolise divine dominion over heaven and earth.

In the lower corners, the four continents are represented allegorically, accompanied by animals and attributes traditionally associated with them in seventeenth-century European art. At lower left, Europe appears surrounded by symbols of prosperity and power, including a horse and a cornucopia. Beside her, America is personified by an Indigenous figure wearing a feathered headdress and carrying a bow and arrows, accompanied by a strangely rendered crocodile. At lower right, Asia is represented by a richly dressed figure wearing a turban, accompanied by a camel, while Africa is personified by a dark-skinned figure adorned with jewellery and a feathered headdress, beside a lion. These representations reflect the prevailing European perceptions of the different continents and their inhabitants at the time.

In 1687, Jacob Robyn, together with the Amsterdam map publisher Hendrick Doncker, had published a large four-sheet world map, likewise employing a circular polar projection. The present map is a reduced, single-sheet version of that earlier work. Andreas van Luchtenburg was probably involved in its design, while the elaborate border decorations are attributed to the engraver Jacob Harrewijn, who worked closely with both Robyn and Van Luchtenburg during this period.

Robyn first published the single-sheet world map in 1696. Around 1700, the copperplates passed into the hands of the Amsterdam publishing family Danckerts. Cornelis Danckerts (1664–1717) had Robyn’s name erased from the plate and replaced it with his own publisher’s imprint at the bottom centre, alongside the words Cum Privilegio. The present example represents this second state.

With its unusual projection, fascinating geographical misconceptions and magnificent allegorical decoration, Nieuw Aerdsch Pleyn ranks among the most remarkable Dutch world maps of the late seventeenth century.

Literature: Rodney W.
