ZANDVOORT AS A FASHIONABLE SEASIDE RESORT, C. 1928<\/strong><\/p>\n

This attractive tourist map depicts Zandvoort and the surrounding coastal region in the late 1920s, when the seaside resort had become a popular holiday destination for the affluent middle and upper classes. The map extends from Zandvoort in the west to IJmuiden in the northeast and Haarlem in the south. The extensive dunes, woodlands, country estates, roads, footpaths, railway lines and tram connections are shown in considerable detail. In the lower right corner is a separate street plan of Zandvoort, clearly showing the buildings along the seafront and the principal streets of the town.<\/p>\n

At least as interesting as the map itself is the extensive tourist information printed on the reverse. The local Tourist Association proudly presents Zandvoort as \u201c<\/strong>the second-largest seaside resort in the Netherlands, both in size and in the number of visitors<\/em>\u201d<\/strong>. At the time, the town had approximately 8,000 inhabitants, while the number of registered resort guests had risen from 14,386 in 1926 to 15,159 in 1927. (According to estimates published in 2025, Zandvoort now receives approximately 5.3 million day visits and records around one million tourist overnight stays annually.)<\/p>\n

Zandvoort’s attractions are enthusiastically promoted. In addition to its magnificent beach and extensive dunes, the resort boasts \u201cbeautiful surroundings\u201d<\/em>, \u201cwide, spacious approach roads\u201d<\/em>, a water supply drawn from the dunes, electric lighting, gas and a \u201cgood sewerage system\u201d<\/em>. Accessibility also leaves little to be desired: according to the brochure, Zandvoort can be reached from Amsterdam by train in just thirty minutes, while electric trams connect the resort with Haarlem and Amsterdam every fifteen minutes.<\/p>\n

There is no shortage of entertainment and recreation either. Four sea-bathing establishments offer facilities for bathing in the North Sea, while hotels such as the Grand Hotel, Groot Badhuis<\/a>, Hotel d’Orange<\/a> and the Kurhaus<\/a> promise their guests every possible comfort. Concerts, dances, cabaret performances, a cinema, tennis courts and even fireworks provide ample amusement. The Kennemer Golf Links, opened in 1928, are advertised as the finest golf courses in the Netherlands. For children, a special playground has been established in the Kostverloren park, where they can play to their hearts’ content under supervision. Those who prefer exploring the natural surroundings can join guided walks through the dunes \u201cunder expert supervision\u201d<\/em>, an activity organised for the first time in 1928.<\/p>\n

Practical matters are not overlooked. The brochure provides addresses of physicians attending to bathers, pharmacies, post offices, telephone exchanges, boarding-house proprietors and landlords offering furnished villas. Even a specialist in tuberculosis is listed. Recommended excursions include Bloemendaal, Aerdenhout, the ruins of Brederode Castle and the harbour of IJmuiden, where the new sea lock is proudly described as the largest in Europe.<\/p>\n

Surrounding the map and covering its reverse are dozens of advertisements for hotels, boarding houses, restaurants, shops and local businesses, often illustrated with small photographs. Together, they provide a vivid impression of Zandvoort’s tourist industry and commercial life before the Second World War. Hotels advertise their \u201crunning hot and cold water\u201d<\/em>, restaurants entice guests with dinners and dancing, while merchants offer everything a holidaymaker could possibly desire, from beach accessories and bathing costumes to champagne, cigars and luxury chocolates.<\/p>\n

This richly illustrated map is therefore not only a detailed representation of Zandvoort and its surroundings, but also an entertaining glimpse into Dutch seaside culture during the 1920s, when a holiday by the sea was still associated with a certain sense of grandeur.<\/p>\n
