Size (map image): approx. 43 \u00d7 53.5 cm.<\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nautical_chart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nautical chart<\/a> depicts the Flemish coast and the southern North Sea, from Walcheren and the mouth of the Western Scheldt in the east to Calais and the Strait of Dover in the west. A section of the English coast, including Dover, is shown in the lower right corner.<\/p>\n<p>Along the coastline, we can identify Vlissingen (Flushing), Middelburg, Cadzand, Sluis, Bruges, Ostend, Nieuwpoort, Dunkirk, Gravelines and Calais. The coastline is depicted in considerable detail, with dunes, church towers, fortifications and other landmarks that helped mariners determine their position at sea.<\/p>\n<p>Particularly interesting is the detailed representation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flanders_bank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flanders bank<\/a>, the extensive and constantly shifting system of sandbanks, shoals and navigable channels off the Belgian and northern French coasts. These waters were among the most hazardous stretches of the southern North Sea. The chart identifies numerous sandbanks and channels, with depth soundings intended to help mariners navigate safely through these treacherous waters. The approaches to the Western Scheldt, of vital importance to shipping bound for Antwerp, are also carefully indicated.<\/p>\n<p>The sea is criss-crossed by a dense network of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rhumb_line\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rhumb lines<\/a>, radiating from various points across the chart. These characteristic lines were essential for navigation using the mariner&#8217;s compass. Two finely decorated compass roses, a sailing ship and numerous small coastal details give the chart a distinctly maritime character.<\/p>\n<p>At the top are two Baroque cartouches. The one on the right contains the title, while the cartouche on the left incorporates three scale bars for Dutch, Spanish and English\/French miles.<\/p>\n<p>The chart was published by the Amsterdam engraver and map publisher <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pieter_Goos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pieter Goos<\/a> (1615\u20131675), one of the leading figures in seventeenth-century Dutch maritime cartography.
