Later (?) met de hand gekleurd. \u00a0Afm. 61,5 x 101,5cm.<\/p>\n<p>Deze fraaie kaart van de Nederlanden toont de kwaliteiten van Herman Moll als kaartmaker. Moll draagt het stuk op aan de Engelse staatssecretaris <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Townshend,_2nd_Viscount_Townshend\">Charles Townshend<\/a> wiens familiewapen de kaart siert. Er wordt een schat aan geografische details gegeven, waaronder alle belangrijke steden en hoofdwegen. Atlaskaarten op deze schaal waren een recente innovatie en Moll maakte de grote schaal, leesbaarheid en wat nu gebruiksvriendelijkheid zou worden genoemd tot zijn eigen stijl.<\/p>\n<p>Behalve de hoofdkaart is er een inzetkaart van het Kanaal en de Noordzee en zijn er afbeeldingen van Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Middelburg, Utrecht, Groningen, Huis te Britten en \u201c<em>Late Kings William\u2019s Palace<\/em>\u201d Het Loo. (Over Huis te Britten meldt Moll: \u201c<em>This fortress was built by the Roman emperor Caligula, upon the German Ocean at the mouth of the river Rhine, the a famous port, but now quite choked up with sand. [Abraham] Ortelius says that the very foundation of it was seen in the year 1552 and was found to be square, it also was seen for 20 days altogether in the year 1562 and lastly in the year 1588when people went round it and discovered several rare pieces of antiquity and money etc. About 1200 paces from this fort stood the famous town of Katwijk, now a poor village inhabited by fishermen.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moll was de belangrijkste en meest innovatieve cartograaf in het Londen van het begin van de 18<sup>e<\/sup>-eeuw. Zijn lange en productieve carri\u00e8re omvatte bijna zes decennia waarin hij tientallen atlassen en geschiedenisboeken maakte, evenals talloze losse kaarten, paskaarten en globes van de gehele toen bekende wereld.<\/p>\n<p>Zijn kaarten vervaardigde hij veelal op basis van het werk van andere cartografen. In een soort disclaimer meldt Moll: \u201c<em>This map is taken from actual surveys and the most correct maps that have been done of these provinces.
