Gesigneerd en gedateerd linksonder \u201c<em>J. Sipkes, <b>1832<\/b><\/em>\u201d. Afm. ca. 12,3 x 18 cm. (In lijst: 29,5 x 34 cm).<\/p>\n<p>Van begin 17de eeuw tot in de 19de eeuw werden in de waterrijke delen van de Nederlanden veel verbindingen met trekschuiten onderhouden. (In de 19<sup>de<\/sup> eeuw werd in plaats van trekschuit ook de term volksschuit gebruikt.)<\/p>\n<p>Het was een van de voorlopers van modern openbaar vervoer: de schuit nam iedereen mee die bereid was om het vastgestelde tarief te betalen. Het waren scheepjes die voornamelijk passagiers en hun bagage vervoerden. Ze deden ook aan pakket en postbezorging. Boven de grote rivieren waren trekschuiten vaak van het type <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Snik\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Snik<\/a> of aanverwante types. Een trek schuit wilde niet zeggen dat deze schepen niet konden zeilen. Vooral de jaagschuiten in gebieden met veel meren en brede vaarten hadden vaak ook een (beperkte) zeilage.<\/p>\n<p>De trekschuit vormde vanaf de 17de eeuw tot de schuit door de spoorwegen verdrongen werd niet alleen de belangrijkste, maar ook de goedkoopste en meest comfortabele vorm van openbaar vervoer. In de 19de eeuw kreeg de trekschuit op het water ook concurrentie van de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stoomboot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stoomboot<\/a> en diverse rederijen openden diensten voor passagiersvervoer. In de loop van de 19de eeuw verdrongen trein en stoomboot de trekschuit bijna geheel uit het vervoer en aan het eind van die eeuw was de trekschuit uit het landschap verdwenen.<\/p>\n<p>Van marineschilder Joseph Sipkes (1787-1852) is weinig meer bekend dan dat hij in Amsterdam werkzaam was aan het begin van de 19<sup>de<\/sup>-eeuw.
