\u201cKof bij de wind zeilende<\/b>\u201d aquarel van de hand van Joseph Sipkes<\/strong>. Gesigneerd en gedateerd linksonder \u201cJ. Sipkes, 1831<\/b><\/em>\u201d. Afm. ca. 11,5 x 14,5 cm. (In lijst: 29,5 x 34 cm.)<\/p>\n

Dit type kofschip zonder zwaarden, ook wel schoenerkof genoemd, had een geveegd onderwaterschip<\/a>, iets wat direct terug te voeren is op scheepstypes als de kogge<\/a> en ewers. Grote koffen, tot circa 28 meter, hadden een bezaansmast<\/a> achter de roef<\/a>. Ze werden hoofdzakelijk gebruikt voor de handel op landen rond de Oostzee en haalden daar onder andere graan, vis en hout. Deze lading werd verkocht tot in het zuiden van Frankrijk, en daar werd veelal wijn als retourvracht ingenomen.<\/p>\n

Van marineschilder Joseph Sipkes (1787-1852) is weinig meer bekend dan dat hij in Amsterdam werkzaam was aan het begin van de 19de<\/sup>-eeuw. Naast een aantal werken in olieverf, aquarelleerde hij prachtige scheepsportretten.<\/p>\n
