Anno 1633.<\/strong>\u201d Ets uitgegeven door <strong>Johannes Janssonius<\/strong> te Amsterdam in <strong>1651<\/strong> als deel van <strong>Isaak Commelin<\/strong>\u2019s \u201c<em><a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frederik_Hendrik_van_Oranje\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Frederick Hendrick van Nassauw<\/a> Prince van Orangien: zyn leven en bedryf<\/em>\u201d. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. (plaatrand): 28,6 x 38,1 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Na de successen van de kaperschepen van de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/West-Indische_Compagnie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">West-Indische Compagnie<\/a> (WIC) in 1627 en 1628, waaronder de <a href=\"https:\/\/inter-antiquariaat.nl\/antiek\/diversen\/maritiem\/verovering-zilvervloot-claes-jansz-visscher-1628\/\">verovering van de Spaanse zilvervloot<\/a> door <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Piet_Hein_(zeevaarder)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Piet Hein<\/a> in het jaar 1628, had de WIC genoeg geld om de koloniale macht van de dominante Portugezen en Spanjaarden verder aan te tasten.<\/p>\n<p>Begin 1629 werd door de WIC besloten om zich eerst de Portugese bezittingen in Noord-Oost Brazili\u00eb eigen te maken. De noordkust van Brazili\u00eb bood een goede uitvalsbasis voor aanvallen op de Spaanse zilvervloten en daar bevond zich het merendeel van de suikerproductie. In 1630 wist een expeditieleger bestaande uit 67 schepen en 7000 manschappen onder admiraal <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hendrick_Lonck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hendrick Lonck<\/a> en kolonel Diederick van Waerdenburgh enkele versterkingen rond Recife en Olinda in het Noorden van Brazili\u00eb te veroveren op de Portugezen. Ondanks de snelle en gemakkelijke overwinningen op de noordkust slaagde men er toch niet in om de hele Portugese kolonie te veroveren, waardoor de Portugezen een bedreiging bleven. In 1631 werd bij een <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slag_om_Recife\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Slag om Recife<\/a> een aanval van een Spaans\/Portugese Armada afgeslagen, maar in het binnenland wisten de Portugezen nog jaren stand te houden. Gesteund door nieuwe versterkingen vanuit de Republiek en enkele overlopers uit het Portugese kamp, was de inmiddels tot gouverneur aangestelde, Van Waerdenburgh in staat meerdere capitani\u00ebn in het Noord-Oosten te veroveren zodat hij uiteindelijk in 1634 de kust van de Rio Grande tot aan Cabo do Santo Agostinho beheerste.<\/p>\n<p>Op de ets zien we de Braziliaanse kust met kasteel Tres Reyes aan de monding van de rivier Rio Grande (de huidige Rio Potenji). De naam van het kasteel werd na verovering in december 1633 veranderd in Keulen.
