Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. 20,6 x 27,7 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Gezicht op Batavia met een groot aantal Oost-Indi\u00ebvaarders op de rede.<\/p>\n<p>Batavia, aldus een 18<sup>e<\/sup>-eeuwse bron, werd &#8220;in het verleden Iacarta genaamd&#8221; en was de best verdedigde stad van Indi\u00eb. Het heeft verschillende belegeringen van Javaanse koningen weten te weerstaan. De haven is de veiligste van de hele wereld, iedere ochtend om 10 uur staat er een noordenwind die de &#8220;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shallop\">chaloupen<\/a><\/em>&#8221; naar de stad brengt, iedere avond om 10 uur brengt een zuidenwind ze weer naar zee. In de haven worden de &#8220;schatten&#8221; van de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vereenigde_Oostindische_Compagnie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VOC<\/a> verzameld en worden vanuit hier 12.000 man en 50 schepen bevoorraad. De inwoners van de stad zijn deels Javanen, Chinezen, Maleisi\u00ebrs en <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malabar_(India)\">Malabaren<\/a>, deels Hollanders, Fransen en Portugezen. Men spreekt er Hollands, Maleis, Portugees en Chinees. Batavia is de zetel van de generaal-stadhouder van alle Oost-Indische landen. Batavia was voor de Hollanders de grootste stapelplaats voor koloniale waren, Waar de ruimen der schepen voor de jaarlijkse retourvloot werden volgestouwd.
