SPAANSE ARMADA VERSLAGEN DOOR DE ENGELSEN IN 1588<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kopergravure vervaardigd in 1739<\/strong> door John Pine<\/strong> <\/a>naar een tekening van Clement Lempri\u00e8re voor \u201cThe Tapestry hangings of the House of Lords: representing the several engagements between the English and Spanish fleets, in the ever memorable year MDLXXXVIII<\/em>\u201d. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. (plaatrand): 37,5 x 60,5 cm.<\/p>\n

Het wandtapijt dat als voorbeeld diende voor deze gravure, is gemaakt in opdracht van Lord High Admiral Charles Howard of Effingham<\/a> (1536 1624), die met een serie van tien wandtapijten<\/a> wilde herdenken dat onder zijn bevel de Engelse vloot de Spaanse Armada had verslagen.<\/p>\n

De Engelse vloot is weergegeven als een verenigde zeemacht die als eenheid optrok, hoewel het werkelijkheid een losse groep schepen was geweest die tot dan toe als een piraat op de Spaanse zilvervloot had gejaagd.<\/p>\n

Het tapijt werd geweven door Francis Aertsz Spierincx<\/a> in Delft, naar het ontwerp van Hendrik Cornelisz Vroom<\/a>. Vroom op zijn beurt, gebruikte als leidraad voor zijn ontwerp een kaart van Robert Adams<\/a> uit 1588.<\/p>\n

We zien de Engelse en Spaanse vloot in Het Kanaal in de buurt van de Isle of Portland en Weymouth met bovenaan het wapen van de Engelse koningin Elizabeth I. De voorstelling is gevat in een ornamentrand met 22 portretten van bevelhebbers van de Engelse vloot. Midden boven het portret van Charles Howard, de Lord High Admiral. In de bovenhoeken zijn familiewapen. De voorstelling is een stukje Engelse propaganda, dat ook de Nederlanders een belangrijke rol gespeeld hebben bij het verslaan van de Spaanse armada is op het tapijt ‘vergeten’.<\/p>\n

De wandtapijten hingen in het House of Lords tot het gebouw in 1834 in vlammen opging.<\/p>\n
