Gedrukt in kleur en met de hand bijgewerkt. Afm.: 33,5 x 21,5 cm. (Lijst: 45,5 x 58,5 cm.)<\/p>\n<p>Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683-1741) was een apotheker uit Regensburg wiens zakelijke succes zijn interesse in botanie financierde. Hij legde een botanische tuin aan met een verzameling planten die de basis vormden van de <em>Phytanthoza iconographia<\/em>, een uitgebreide iconografie van &#8220;enkele duizenden planten, bomen, heesters, kruiden, bloemen, vruchten en zwammen, zowel inheemse als buitenlandse, in de loop van vele jaren uit alle vier de werelddelen met onvermoeibare ijver verzameld, die zijn gegraveerd in het mooiste koper, en tegelijkertijd op een lang gevraagde en nieuw uitgevonden manier, naar de natuur met levendige kleuren in de meest sierlijke illustraties.<\/p>\n<p>Om zijn florilegium te illustreren, huurde Weinmann de briljante jonge botanisch kunstenaar <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Georg_Dionysius_Ehret\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Georg Dionysius Ehret<\/a> (1708-1770) in, die in zijn onervarenheid instemde met zeer ongunstige arbeidsvoorwaarden. Ehret verafschuwde de gierige betaling en verliet het project na het vervaardigen van 500 ontwerpen en zijn cruciale bijdrage aan het werk wordt nergens in de publicatie erkend. De platen maakten een enorme indruk op andere kunstenaars, botanici en drukkers, en inspireerden onder meer <a href=\"https:\/\/inter-antiquariaat.nl\/antiek\/diversen\/botanische-prenten-en-tekeningen\/tulp-adam-ludwig-wirsing-voor-christoph-jakob-trew-1750-1786\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christoph Trew,<\/a> die zijn &#8220;<em>Plantae Selectae<\/em>&#8221; zag als een verlengstuk van Weinmanns werk (een dit keer goedbetaalde Ehret maakte daarbij de illustraties voor Trew).<\/p>\n<p>Het <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mezzotint\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mezzotintproc\u00e9d\u00e9<\/a> dat voor de <em>Phytanthoza<\/em> werd gebruikt, was omstreeks 1688 uitgevonden in Nederland door <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johannes_Teiler\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Johannes Teiler<\/a>. Zoals bij deze plaat vervaardigd door <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johann_Jacob_Haid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Johann Jakob Haid<\/a> (1704-67), was het in feite een combinatie van <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Etsen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ets<\/a> en mezzotint, waardoor fijne lijnen en een zeer fijne korrel mogelijk waren.
