Visscher en uitgegeven in <strong>1613<\/strong> door <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lodovico_Guicciardini\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Lodovico Guicciardini<\/strong><\/a>. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. 13,8 x 19,6 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Na de <a href=\"https:\/\/inter-antiquariaat.nl\/antiek\/diversen\/diversen-voor-1880\/slag-bij-nieuwpoort-matthias-de-sallieth-naar-dirk-langedijk-1783\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Slag bij Nieuwpoort<\/a> in 1600 kwam de werktuigbouwkundige <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Simon_Stevin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Simon Stevin<\/a> (1548-1620) op het idee om een wagen met een zeil te bouwen. Hij legde het plan voor aan <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maurits_van_Oranje\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prins Maurits<\/a>, destijds stadhouder van Holland en Zeeland, aan wie Stevin sinds 1593 priv\u00e9lessen wiskunde gaf. Tevens diende Stevin als ingenieur in het leger van de prins. Maurits, die veel waardering voor Stevin had, zag wel wat in het voorstel en liet de zeilwagen op zijn kosten bouwen.<\/p>\n<p>De eerste rit met het nieuwe voertuig werd in februari 1602 gemaakt. Met een toen ongekende snelheid van 50 km per uur werd over het strand in twee uur de afstand Scheveningen\u2013 Petten afgelegd.
