Size: 19 x 38 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Bloch\u2019s work on the \u201c<em>Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische<\/em>\u201d occupied a considerable portion of his life, and is considered to have laid the foundations of the science of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ichthyology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ichthyology<\/a>. The publication was encouraged by a large subscription, and it passed rapidly through five editions in German and in French. Bloch made little or no alteration in the systematic arrangement of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peter_Artedi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peter Artedi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carl_Linnaeus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carl Linnaeus<\/a>, although he was disposed to introduce into the classification some modifications depending on the structure of the gills. To the number of genera before established, he found it necessary to add nineteen new ones, and he described 276 species new to science, many of them inhabitants of the remotest parts of the ocean, and by the brilliancy of their colours, or the singularity of their forms, as much objects of popular admiration as of scientific curiosity.<\/p>\n<p>Bloch is considered the most important ichthyologist of the 18th century.<\/p>\n<div class=\"relative flex w-[calc(100%-50px)] flex-col gap-1 md:gap-3 lg:w-[calc(100%-115px)]\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-grow flex-col gap-3\">\n<div class=\"min-h-[20px] flex flex-col items-start gap-4 whitespace-pre-wrap\">\n<div class=\"markdown prose w-full break-words dark:prose-invert light\">\n<p><em>Salmo Lavaretus<\/em>, also known as the Arctic char(r), is a species of freshwater fish in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Salmonidae\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Salmonidae<\/a> family. It is native to the cold, clear waters of the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions and is a close relative of the salmon and trout. The Arctic char has a streamlined body. They have a predatory lifestyle and feed on smaller fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. Arctic char are an important food fish in many northern communities and are also popular as a sport fish today.
