Afm. 27,7 x 37,6 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Tegen het einde van de 16e eeuw was Pernambuco een economisch succesvolle Portugese kolonie, met name vanwege de welvarende suikerrietteelt. <a href=\"https:\/\/inter-antiquariaat.nl\/antiek\/diversen\/maritiem\/olinda-nederlands-brazilie-johannes-janssonius-1651\/\">Olinda<\/a>, de hoofdstad van Pernambuco, had jezu\u00efetenscholen en een ziekenhuis. Tegen 1580 was <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pernambuco#Geschiedenis\">Pernambuco<\/a> &#8217;s werelds grootste producent van suiker, terwijl de Nederlanders (die vriendschappelijke relaties onderhielden met Portugal) het verwerkten en verspreidden over Europa. Deze zoete handel werd bitter toen Spanje (dat met Nederland verwikkeld was in <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tachtigjarige_Oorlog\">Tachtig Jarige Oorlog<\/a>) <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iberische_Unie\">de Portugese kroon overnam<\/a> en Braziliaanse havens sloot voor Nederland.<\/p>\n<p>Om deze situatie op te lossen, deden de Nederlanders wat elke moderne durfkapitalist doet als onderhandelingen vastlopen: een vijandelijke overname. De <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/West-Indische_Compagnie\">West-Indische Compagnie<\/a> werd opgericht in 1621 en Nederland stuurde verschillende expedities naar de noordoostkust van Brazili\u00eb om de controle over haar &#8220;overzeese investering&#8221; te herstellen.<\/p>\n<p>In 1635 veroveren de Nederlanders Cabo de Santo Agostinho van de Portugezen. Op deze prent zien we kaap Sint Augustijn inmiddels in Nederlandse handen. Een vogelvlucht perspectief met de daar gelegen forten.
