“Vue de la Place Royale Bruxelles<\/em><\/strong>” ets met aquatint vervaardigd rond 1825<\/strong> door Johann Nepomuk Gib\u00e8le<\/strong><\/a> naar een tekening van C. Janssens <\/strong>(de figuren door Jean Baptiste Madou<\/strong><\/a>). Afm. (voorstelling) 50,8 x 80 cm (incl. tekst 58,5 x 80 cm).<\/p>\n

We zien het Koningsplein in Brussel, in 1776 gebouwd in neoclassicistische stijl ter gelegenheid van de 25e verjaardag van de regeerperiode van landvoogd Karel van Lotharingen. Links de gebouwen van het Hotel Coudenberg met in het midden de Sint-Jacob-op-Koudenberg<\/a> kerk. Aan de overkant van het plein links het H\u00f4tel de Templeuve (in die tijd woning van de gravin van Templeuve, vanaf 1865 \u2018Paleis van de graaf van Vlaanderen<\/a>\u2019), met daar tegenover het H\u00f4tel des Brasseurs, de zetel van de brouwersgilde (tegenwoordig deel van het Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten). Het gebouw daarnaast, rechts achter in de hoek, is het H\u00f4tel du Lotto, gebouwd als zetel van de Koninklijke en Keizerlijke Loterij, tegenwoordig het Magritte museum.<\/p>\n

De twee zuilen in het midden aan de overzijde van het plein, zijn in 1827 weggehaald om plaats te maken voor de aanleg van de Regentschapstraat\/Rue de la R\u00e9gence.<\/p>\n

De prent is gemaakt in een turbulente tijd. De Belgen zijn ontevreden en werken toe naar de onafhankelijkheid van hun land. Toch is er niets dat doet denken aan revolutie, het plein straalt sereniteit uit, de mensen lijken zich zorgeloos voort te bewegen door de stad. Misschien was het propaganda van de opdrachtgever van deze fraaie grote voorstelling?<\/p>\n
