DE DAME IN DE ZWARTE JURK<\/strong><\/p>\n

Houtskooltekening vervaardigd door \u201cC. Wagner<\/strong>\u201d(?) rond 1890<\/strong>. Afm. ca. 23 x 30 cm.<\/p>\n

Het nachtleven in Parijs bruist aan het eind van de negentiende eeuw. Het is de Belle \u00c9poque<\/a>. De olielantaarns op straat werden vervangen door gaslantaarns. Dit zorgde voor meer en beter licht, waardoor het minder gevaarlijk was om \u2019s avonds naar buiten te gaan. Ontmoeten kon nu \u2018en publique<\/em>\u2019 en hoefde niet meer in de priv\u00e9sfeer. Er vond een kleine sociale revolutie plaats. Er kwamen steeds meer caf\u00e9s, bars, theaters en andere etablissementen waar men in de avonduren vertier kon vinden.<\/p>\n

Een belangrijk deel van het sociale leven van de Parijse hogere klassen speelde zich af tijdens de bals masqu\u00e9s. Verschuild achter een masker en gekleed in flamboyante tenues, kon men ontsnappen aan de sociale restricties die het dagelijks leven domineerden. De gasten mochten hun identiteit verborgen houden en hoefden zich niet volgens de heersende conventies te gedragen. Het waren vaak vrolijke en luidruchtige feesten waar buitensporig veel werd gegeten, gedronken, geflirt, gedanst en gegokt. Niet voor niets werden ze in de volksmond ook wel \u2018carnaval achter gesloten deuren\u2019 genoemd.<\/p>\n

Maskerades waren onlosmakelijk verbonden met een atmosfeer van avontuur, mysterie en erotiek. Alles was mogelijk: vrouwen verkleed als Kozakken, mannen als hoerenmadams, hertogen als lakeien en prostituees als gravinnen.<\/p>\n
