Ottaviani<\/strong> naar het ontwerp van <strong>Niccola Matraini<\/strong> voor &#8220;<em>Gazzettiere Americano contenente un distinto ragguaglio di tutte le parti del Nuovo Mondo\u2026<\/em>\u201d (aardrijkskundig naslagwerk van Amerika, met een gedetailleerd verslag van alle delen van de Nieuwe Wereld), uitgegeven in <strong>1777<\/strong>. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. 20,3 x 35,1cm.<\/p>\n<p>Op 16 november 1776 was het Sint Eustatius die de Amerikanen als eerste in hun vrijheidsstrijd tegen het Verenigd Koninkrijk steunde en hen vanuit <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fort_Oranje_(Sint_Eustatius)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fort Oranje<\/a> met brullende kanonschoten <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sint_Eustatius#Het_eerste_saluut\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">salueerde<\/a>. Dit was het startsein voor een komen en gaan van schepen, aanvankelijk voor de aanvoer van wapens en later als doorvoerhaven en pleisterplek. Hoofdstad Oranjestad, hier prominent afgebeeld, was verdeeld in een boven en een benedenstad, werd een winstgevende en drukke vrijhaven van de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/West-Indische_Compagnie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">West-Indische Compagnie<\/a> waar de meest luxueuze goederen belastingvrij werden verhandeld en opgeslagen, een goudmijn waaraan het zijn naam \u2018The Golden Rock\u2019 te danken heeft.<\/p>\n<p>Naarmate de 18e eeuw ten einde liep, verloor Sint Eustatius geleidelijk aan zijn belang als handelscentrum en verlieten de meeste kooplieden en plantagehouders hun huizen en pakhuizen.
