Esdras Willemsz Snellaert <\/strong>en <strong>Gerrit Nieuwenhuysen<\/strong> te Amsterdam in <strong>1652<\/strong> als deel van <strong>Isaak Commelin<\/strong>\u2019s \u201c<em>Frederick Hendrick van Nassauw Prince van Orangien: zyn leven en bedryf<\/em>\u201d. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. (plaatrand): 28 \u00d7 36,1 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Na de successen van de kaperschepen van de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/West-Indische_Compagnie\">West-Indische Compagnie<\/a> (WIC) in 1627 en 1628, waaronder de <a href=\"https:\/\/inter-antiquariaat.nl\/antiek\/diversen\/maritiem\/verovering-zilvervloot-claes-jansz-visscher-1628\/\">verovering van de Spaanse zilvervloot<\/a> door <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Piet_Hein_(zeevaarder)\">Piet Hein<\/a> in het jaar 1628, had de WIC genoeg geld om de koloniale macht van de dominante Portugezen en Spanjaarden verder aan te tasten.<\/p>\n<p>We zien de verovering van de stad Olinda te Pernambuco in Brazili\u00eb door een vloot van de WIC onder admiraal <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hendrick_Lonck\">Hendrick Loncq<\/a> in februari 1630. Boven een gezicht op Olinda vanaf het water met enkele brandende gebouwen. Onder de Hollandse vloot gelegen voor Olinda aan de Braziliaanse kust.<\/p>\n<p>Olinda was de hoofdstad van de Portugese kolonie Pernambuco. In de 17e eeuw werd het Koninkrijk Portugal verenigd met Spanje (de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iberische_Unie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Iberische Unie<\/a> van 1580-1640). Gebruikmakend van deze periode van Portugese zwakte, werd het gebied rond Olinda en Recife bezet door de Nederlanders die toegang kregen tot de Portugese suikerrietplantages.<\/p>\n<p>Op 16 februari 1630 namen de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Republiek_der_Zeven_Verenigde_Nederlanden\">Nederlanders<\/a> de stad in als onderdeel van <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nederlands-Brazili%C3%AB\">Nederlands-Brazili\u00eb<\/a>. Na de verovering stelden zij eerst een voorlopige regering in. Op <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/11_maart\">11 maart<\/a> werden er een Hoge Raad en een gouverneur ingesteld. De Nederlanders besloten om hun hoofdstad niet in Olinda te vestigen maar in het nabijgelegen <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mauritsstad\">Mauritsstad<\/a> (het huidige Recife). Zij haalden daarop de rijkdommen uit Olinda weg, en staken de stad op 24 november 1631 in brand.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johan_Maurits_van_Nassau-Siegen\">Johan Maurits, prins van Nassau-Siegen<\/a>, werd in 1637 door de Nederlandse West-Indische Compagnie op voordracht van <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frederik_Hendrik_van_Oranje\">Frederik Hendrik<\/a> benoemd tot gouverneur van de Nederlandse bezittingen in Brazili\u00eb. Hij landde in Recife, de haven van Pernambuco en het belangrijkste bolwerk van de Nederlanders, in januari 1637. Door een reeks succesvolle expedities breidde hij geleidelijk de Nederlandse bezittingen uit van Sergipe in het zuiden tot S\u00e3o Lu\u00eds de Maranh\u00e3o in het noorden.
