\u201cLa Dame aux Cam\u00e9lias<\/strong><\/em>\u201d kleurenlithografie naar het ontwerp van Alphonse Mucha <\/strong>(1860 \u2013 1936) en gedrukt door F. Alphonse Mucha werd geboren in Moravi\u00eb<\/a> (huidig Tsjechi\u00eb) en is onlosmakelijk verbonden met de Art Nouveau<\/a>, aanvankelijk \u2018le style Mucha<\/em>\u2019 genoemd. Als geen ander wist hij de Slavische ziel met een licht melancholische inslag weer te geven. In 1887 vertrok Mucha naar Parijs. Heel de stad was overweldigd door zijn werk en de affiches werden zelfs van de straten geroofd. De sierlijke lijnen, frisse pastelkleuren en weelderige motieven in zijn illustraties van sensuele vrouwen, werden de iconen van het f<\/em>in de si\u00e8cle<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mucha\u2019s stijl komt prachtig tot uiting in de grote affiches die hij in de jaren 1890 ontwierp en waarmee hij beroemd en internationaal erkend werd. De belangrijkste daarvan zijn de affiches voor de Parijse actrice Sarah Bernhardt<\/a>. Wat dit werk uit artistiek oogpunt revolutionair maakte, was het raffinement dat hij inbracht in wat tot dan toe een uiterst kleurrijk, vaak zelfs schel, Parijs straatdecor was geweest. Dankzij Mucha\u2019s bijdrage verwierf de affiche een nieuwe betekenis in de moderne kunst.<\/p>\n

Mucha slaagde erin om de affiches voor Sarah Bernhardt een grote dramatisch kracht te verlenen. Zijn intu\u00eftieve gevoel voor wat visueel effectief is, blijkt uit alle creaties.<\/p>\n

Sarah Bernhardt speelde meer dan eens de hoofdrol in La Dame aux Cam\u00e9lias van Alexandre Dumas<\/a>. Mucha\u2019s affiche was bedoeld voor de reprise van 1896. Dit prachtige werk geeft een dramatisch beeld van de tragische liefde van de courtisane Camille die, stervend aan tuberculose, haar minnaar van zijn trouwbelofte ontslaat. De verzwakte heldin leunt tegen de balustrade tegen een achtergrond van zilveren sterren. Witte camelia\u2019s, haar favoriete bloem, zijn volop aanwezig. Zij heeft er een in haar haar en de andere, in de hand van het noodlot linksonder, staat voor de dood. De gladde stengel van de plant contrasteert met de doornige rozen die de harten in de omlijsting boven de figuur omknellen en die naar het hoofdthema van het toneelstuk verwijzen: het ultieme offer van de liefde.<\/p>\n

Rond de jaren 1890 waren de straten van de Franse steden verlevendigd door grote, kleurrijke affiches. Op speciaal daarvoor opgerichte zuilen<\/a> en andere oppervlakten die zich er voor leenden, werden de vaak immens grote affiches geplakt. Deze nieuwe straatkunst bracht ook een enorme verzamelwoede op gang. De populariteit van deze \u2018fresco\u2019s van het trottoir\u2019, zoals het affiche bewonderend werd genoemd, gold echter niet alleen voor de aankondigingen van de diverse culturele manifestaties. Het medium werd ook gezien als een interessante vorm van betaalbare kunst voor het grote publiek en gaf bovendien de kunsthandel een nieuwe impuls.<\/p>\n

Inspelend op dit grote succes, ontstond in 1895 op initiatief van Jules Ch\u00e9ret<\/a> in samenwerking met Impremerie Chaix de serie \u2018Les Ma\u00eetres de l\u2019Affiche<\/em>\u2019. Men kon zich abonneren op deze chromolithografische afdrukken, op klein formaat los in mappen uitgegeven affiches, die driemaandelijks van december 1895 tot november 1900 uitkwam. In een oplage van vier stuks per maand zijn er in de vijf jaar van het bestaan 256 affiches uitgegeven.<\/p>\n

Het papier waarop ze gedrukt werden was van zeer hoge kwaliteit. Dit in tegenstelling tot de reguliere grote affiches, die op een mindere kwaliteit papier werden gedrukt, maar dan ook een ander doel dienden. De mooie heldere afbeeldingen van Les<\/em> Ma\u00eetres de l\u2019Affiche<\/em> geven een interessant beeld van wat er zich op het gebied van het culturele leven, gezien door de ogen van diverse bekende kunstenaars, aan het einde van de 19de-eeuw afspeelde.<\/p>\n
