Tussen 1630 en 1654 was een deel van de noordoostelijke kust van Brazili\u00eb onder controle van de West Indische Compagnie<\/a> (WIC). Een belangrijk deel van deze periode (1636-1644) was Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen<\/a> gouverneur-generaal<\/a> van Nederlands-Brazili\u00eb. Hij probeerde dit gebied tot centrum van de WIC te maken. Om die reden heeft hij ook de bijnaam ‘de Braziliaan’ gekregen. (Inmiddels is er overigens veel discussie over de figuur van Johan Maurits, vanwege zijn rol in de handel in slaafgemaakten en de suikerproductie in Brazili\u00eb.) Het Mauritshuis<\/a>, dat hij na zijn terugkeer in Nederland liet bouwen, werd om zijn betrokkenheid bij de productie en handel in suiker ook wel het Suikerpaleis genoemd.<\/p>\n

Om de geografie en cultuur, maar vooral ook de economische mogelijkheden van het gebied goed te leren kennen, liet Johan Maurits een uitgebreid gezelschap aan wetenschappers en kunstenaars naar Nederlands-Brazili\u00eb komen, om het land te onderzoeken, verkennen en te tekenen en beschrijven. De Duitse astronoom, natuurhistoricus en cartograaf Georg Marggrafe<\/a> (1610-1644) was een van hen. Hij maakte in 1643 een geheel nieuwe kaart van Nederlands-Brazili\u00eb op basis van verkenningstochten die tussen 1640 en 1643 plaatsvonden. In 1647 verscheen die kaart voor het eerst in druk, in vier bladen bij uitgever Joan Blaeu<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Marggrafe tekende op zijn kaart steeds slechts een smalle strook land langs de kust. Dat is op zich niet zo opmerkelijk, omdat het Nederlandse gezag zich ook niet ver in het binnenland uitstrekte. Op deze gravure staan de zgn. ‘capitanias’ (kapiteinschappen) Pernambuco<\/a> en Itamaraca<\/a>. De indeling van Brazili\u00eb in ‘capitanias’ was bedacht door de Portugezen om de bestuurbaarheid van het gebied te bevorderen. De Portugese overheid gaf de ‘capitanias’ aan particulieren in beheer.<\/p>\n

Joan Blaeu nam de kaarten van Marggrafe op in zijn atlas, maar voegde er ook nog iets aan toe. Om de levendigheid van het kaartmateriaal te vergroten en de lege plekken in het binnenland op te vullen, kopieerde Blaeu Braziliaanse taferelen van landschapsschilder Frans Post<\/a>. Zo zien we op dit blad een suikerrietplantage in bedrijf. Aan de onderzijde van de kaart is de zeeslag tussen de Nederlanders en de Portugezen in 1640<\/a> afgebeeld.<\/p>\n

De \u2018capitania’ Pernambuco, met Olinda als hoofdstad, was vanwege de vele suikerplantages in economisch opzicht het belangrijkste district. De haven van Olinda, Recife, lag zeer strategisch en was goed te verdedigen tegen mogelijke vijanden, omdat het lag ingeklemd tussen een rif aan de ene kant en een moeilijk bevaarbare rivier aan de andere kant.<\/p>\n

Toen gouverneur-generaal Johan Maurits in Pernambuco arriveerde, liet hij eerst Olinda vernietigen en bouwde hij vervolgens in de nabijheid Mauritsstad als nieuw bestuurscentrum. Op het grotere buureiland Antonio Vaz werden verdedigingswerken, maar ook woningen gebouwd omdat Recife al snel overbevolkt raakte. De stad kreeg de eerste brug van de nieuwe wereld.<\/p>\n

In 1644 vertrok Johan Maurits uit Nederlands-Brazili\u00eb. Er werd een Hoge Raad ingesteld om het bestuur over het gebied te continueren. Maar het Nederlandse momentum was voorbij. Nederlanders waren niet langer in staat om de Portugezen het hoofd te bieden en moesten al gauw gebieden prijs geven. In 1654 werd Recife als laatste Nederlandse nederzetting aan Portugal verkocht voor zout en geld.<\/p>\n

Blaeu gaf deze kaart voor het eerst uit als deel van Casparus Barleus<\/a> “Rerum per octennium in Brasilia<\/em>” in 1647. Als de Atlas Maior<\/em> in 1662 op de markt komt, is de zeggenschap van Nederland in Brazili\u00eb dus eigenlijk al voorbij.<\/p>\n
