\u201cGezigt uit de waag, op de sint Martens toren<\/a> en de noordzijde van het stadshuis, te Groningen<\/strong>\u201d. Kopergravure naar een tekening van en gegraveerd door Hendrik Leffert Mijling<\/strong> (ook wel genaamd Meyling) uitgegeven door Roelof Jacob Schierbeek tussen 1810 en 1821<\/strong>. In de tijd met de hand gekleurd. Afm. 27 x 36 cm.<\/p>\n

We zien het middelpunt van Groningen, de Grote Markt, in die tijd nog de Breede Merckt met zgn. riepen, afgescheiden paden langs de huizen gemarkeerd door paaltjes. In 1870 worden ze vervangen door trottoirs.<\/p>\n

Het nieuwe stadhuis staat te pronken op het plein. Voor de bouw van een nieuw raadhuis werd een prijsvraag uitgeschreven. Winnaar werd Jacob Otten Husly<\/a>, directeur van de tekenacademie in Amsterdam. Het werk werd in 1792 wegens geldgebrek stilgelegd. Ook de grootste promotor van het nieuwe stadhuis, burgemeester Van Iddekinge overleed. Diens opvolgers voerden allerlei wijzigingen en bezuinigingen door en aan het begin van de 19de eeuw kon opnieuw met de bouw worden begonnen. Pas in 1810 kwam het nieuwe classicistische gebouw gereed.<\/p>\n
