Size: 49 x 56.1 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Nicolas Visscher II&#8217;s beautiful map of England is a fascinating blend between a historical and modern map.<\/p>\n<p>The kingdom of England emerged from the gradual unification of the early medieval <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anglo-Saxon_kingdoms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anglo-Saxon kingdoms<\/a> known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heptarchy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heptarchy<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kingdom_of_East_Anglia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">East Anglia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mercia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Northumbria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Northumbria<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kingdom_of_Kent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kent<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kingdom_of_Essex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Essex<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kingdom_of_Sussex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sussex<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wessex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wessex<\/a>. The map shows these seven kingdoms, but also depicts the contemporary counties.<\/p>\n<p>After a series of conflicts between the Dutch and the English, it was the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glorious_Revolution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glorious Revolution<\/a> (1686-1688) that made Dutch stadholder <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_III_of_England\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William of Orange<\/a> king of England. Relationships between both countries at the end of the 17th century were therefore very good. Dutch publisher <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nicolaes_Visscher_II\">Nicolaes Visscher<\/a> praised the new English king with this map. It would take almost a century before a next Anglo-Dutch war.<\/p>\n<p>The map is dense with the names of towns and cities, with post roads delineated throughout.<\/p>\n<p>At top right there is an elaborate title cartouche with several allegorical figures flocked around Saint Cecilia and her lyre; below is the royal arms and a dedication to William III.<\/p>\n<p>The cartouche is signed by draftsman <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philip_Tideman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Philip Tideman<\/a> and engraver <a href=\"https:\/\/rkd.nl\/artists\/124717\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gilliam van der Gouwen<\/a>.
