Size: approx.. 55 x 74 cm.<\/p>\n<p>This rare and large lithograph shows Paris during the 1878 World Exposition, a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World%27s_fair\">world&#8217;s fair<\/a> held from 1 May to 10 November 1878, to celebrate the recovery of France after the 1870\u201371 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Franco-Prussian_War\">Franco-Prussian War<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This exposition was on a far larger scale than any previously held anywhere in the world. It covered over 270,000\u00a0m<sup>2<\/sup>, the main building in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Champ_de_Mars\">Champ de Mars<\/a> and the hill of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chaillot\">Chaillot<\/a>, occupying 220,000\u00a0m<sup>2<\/sup>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pont_d%27I%C3%A9na\">Pont d&#8217;I\u00e9na<\/a> linked the two exhibition sites along a central <em>all\u00e9e<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the buildings and statues were made of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Staff_(building_material)\"><em>staff<\/em><\/a>, a low-cost temporary building material invented in Paris in 1876, which consisted of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jute\">jute<\/a> fiber, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plaster_of_Paris\">plaster of Paris<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cement\">cement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the northern bank of the Seine River, an elaborate palace was constructed for the exhibition at the tip of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trocad%C3%A9ro,_Paris\">Place du Trocad\u00e9ro<\/a>. It was a handsome &#8220;Moorish&#8221; structure, with towers 76 metres in height and flanked by two galleries. (The building stood until 1937.) On 30 June 1878, the completed head of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Statue_of_Liberty\">Statue of Liberty<\/a> was showcased in the garden of the Trocad\u00e9ro palace, while other pieces were on display in the Champs de Mars.<\/p>\n<p>Among the many inventions on display was <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_Graham_Bell\">Alexander Graham Bell<\/a>&#8217;s telephone. Electric <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arc_lamp\">arc lighting<\/a> had been installed all along the Avenue de l&#8217;Opera and the Place de l&#8217;Opera, and in June, a switch was thrown and the area was lit by electric <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yablochkov_candle\">Yablochkov arc lamps<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Edison\">Thomas Edison<\/a> had on display a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Megaphone\">megaphone<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phonograph\">phonograph<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The central bird&#8217;s-eye overview (with hot air balloon!) is surrounded by highlights Paris had (and has) to offer: the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Place_Vend%C3%B4me\">Place Vend\u00f4me<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Place_du_Carrousel\">Place du Carroussel<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fontaine_Saint-Michel\">Fontaine Saint-Michel<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Notre-Dame_de_Paris\">Notre Dame<\/a>, the Russian <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_Nevsky_Cathedral,_Paris\">Alexander Nevsky Cathedral<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Place_de_la_Concorde\">Place de la Concorde<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Place_de_la_Bastille\">Place de la Bastille<\/a>, the grand <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avenue_de_l%27Op%C3%A9ra\">Avenue de l\u2019Op\u00e9ra<\/a>, the principal fa\u00e7ade of the Palais du Champ de Mars (on the place of which Gustave Eiffel would build his <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eiffel_Tower\">tower<\/a> at the next World Exhibition in 1889), and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paris_Opera\">Op\u00e9ra<\/a> house.<\/p>\n<p>Landscape painter Leon-Auguste Asselineau (1808-1889) created a number of\u00a0lithographic views of cities.\u00a0 Later in his career, he moved to\u00a0Normandy, where he became a noted painter of Ocean Liners.<\/p>\n<p>Price: Euro 1.950,-<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Paris et L\u2019Exposition Universelle de 1878&#8220;, lithograph (mounted on modern linen) made by Leon-Auguste Asselineau and printed by Frick fils in 1878.
