Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm.: 23,5 \u00d7 32 cm.<\/p>\n<p>In het titelcartouche linksonder wordt Groningen omschreven als een welvarende en dichtbevolkte stad van <em>Frisia<\/em>, stevig versterkt tegen vijandelijke aanvallen. Cartograaf <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Claudius_Ptolemaeus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ptolemaeus<\/a> (ca. AD 87-150) uit Alexandri\u00eb zou haar <em>Phileum<\/em> hebben genoemd. Volgens de (fictieve) kroniekschrijver Humbaldus werd de stad reeds in 377 v. Chr. gesticht door legendarische Grunno, de broer van koning Anthenor van de Franken. Dergelijke verwijzingen naar klassieke en legendarische oorsprongen waren gebruikelijk in vroegmoderne stadsliteratuur, en onderstreepten ouderdom en prestige van de stad.<\/p>\n<p>Op de kaart zelf zien we Groningen in vogelvluchtperspectief, omringd door grachten en vestingwerken. Links boven staat het stadswapen met de dubbele adelaar. Het stadsbeeld wordt gedomineerd door de Grote Markt met het stadhuis en de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martinikerk_(Groningen)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Martinikerk<\/a>, en door de Vismarkt met de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Akerk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Akerk<\/a>. Beide kerken vinden hun oorsprong in de 13e eeuw, maar werden in de 15e eeuw ingrijpend verbouwd en uitgebreid. Bij de Martinikerk hoort de 97 meter hoge Martinitoren, in de volksmond \u201c<em>d\u2019Olle Grieze<\/em>\u201d [de oude grijze].<\/p>\n<p>Dankzij haar strategische ligging groeide Groningen in de 13e eeuw uit tot een belangrijk handelscentrum. In 1282 trad de stad toe tot het <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hanze\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hanzeverbond<\/a>, waardoor vele kooplieden zich hier vestigden. Na korte tijd onder Habsburgse heerschappij te hebben gestaan (vanaf 1536), sloot de stad zich in 1594 aan bij de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Republiek_der_Zeven_Verenigde_Nederlanden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Republiek der Verenigde Nederlanden<\/a>.
