Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. 49,5 x 59,5 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Opmerkelijk is dat de kaart de inrichting van de binnentuinen in de stad toont, al is het onwaarschijnlijk dat het een waarheidsgetrouw beeld anno 1720 geeft.<\/p>\n<p>Links van het cartouche onderaan zit de stedenmaagd van Amsterdam. Zij is afgebeeld met in haar arm een <a href=\"https:\/\/historiek.net\/hoorn-des-overvloeds-cornucopia\/149691\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hoorn des Overvloeds<\/a>, waaruit vruchten en bloemen tevoorschijn komen. Dit is een traditioneel symbool van welvaart, voorspoed en economische overvloed, en verwijst naar Amsterdam als handelsmetropool en stapelmarkt van Europa. Naast haar staat een bijenkorf, een embleem van vlijt, ordelijkheid en collectieve arbeid, dat de koopmansgeest en burgerlijke deugden van de stad onderstreept. Aan haar voeten liggen gereedschappen die met nijverheid worden geassocieerd.<\/p>\n<p>Rechts van het cartouche bevindt zich een visser met een roeispaan en wordt omgeven door visnetten, vissen en schelpdieren. Deze figuur belichaamt de maritieme en nautische basis van Amsterdams rijkdom: de visserij, de binnenvaart en de directe relatie van de stad met zee, rivieren en havens. Zijn aanwezigheid vormt een bewuste tegenhanger van de meer verheven stedenmaagd en benadrukt dat de stedelijke welvaart rust op praktische arbeid en exploitatie van het water.<\/p>\n<p>Het feit dat er een Engelstalige kaart van Amsterdam verscheen, weerspiegelt de nauwe politieke en economische verwevenheid tussen Groot-Brittanni\u00eb en de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Republiek_der_Zeven_Verenigde_Nederlanden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Republiek<\/a> in het vroege 18de-eeuwse Europa. Sinds de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glorious_Revolution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glorious Revolution<\/a> van 1688 waren beide staten bondgenoten en partners in handel, financi\u00ebn en diplomatie.
